Creepshow

I’ve always loved watching and re-watching these over the years. Its been so long since i’ve seen the first, I don’t remember what the stories were. I think that’s because they show part 2 quite often and I’ve learned there’s a 3rd movie. Only one thing, I also sometimes get what stories are creepshow and what is Tales from the Crypt (or is Creepshow part of that ‘Tales of Terror’?)

When they mentioned a tv show would be coming I was a little disappointed it would be on a streaming service. Thankfully though it was aired on AMC (the Home of the Walking Dead)

Here I review the movies as well as any seasons of the show.  My recap/review of the 2nd movie and first season is already finished, but this will be updated as I watch the movies and as season 2 goes on.

Creepshow 1982

(find it on Just Watch See the source image

Not sure if I have the titles noted in order, but as  I remember some of the tales without having to watch I’ll include a quick summary.  You can find on amazon  to rent.

The Lonesome Death of Jordi Verrill

Stephen King!!

Simple farmer Jordy finds a meteor, picks it up and brings it home. He finds his finger has something growing on it.

Not sure if it was radiation that caused what happens to jordy, but that will teach ya not to pick things up not of this world.

Father’s Day

I remember a cake, a family and an old man. aside from that I don’t remember much, other than a tiny spec of what happens.

The Crate

This is the best! So other than the picture…I’m not telling

Creepshow 2

1987   R    92 minutes

See the source image

The following are based on stories by Stephen King. I remember seeing these so long ago, but still remember them more or less. Though I usually get these and the ones from the first Creepshow movie mixed up as to which are in what volume.

Old Chief Wood N’ head

In the Town of Dead River, the old  general store and its elder owner is one of the last holdouts in town to sell. When the store is robbed, its guardian, a wooden Indian goes to war on the criminals. this is the one I always liked and remembered best, as well as

The Raft …

a bunch of what I think is supposed to be 20 somethings go for a swim at a pretty lake. When they get there they are trapped by what looks like floating sludge garbage)

I don’t know what it is about movies with water but for some reason THESE are the ones that make me think twice about going in the water. First Jaws (ankle deep first time in ocean and ask are there sharks.. Mind you I think this was in Jr. high!) and this movie which there WAS a raft like this  I had to swim out to at a lake beach we’d go to. Between shore and the raft everytime something (weeds ?) touched me I would freak out. One time to the point where the lifeguard had to call me out.

The last is the Hitchhiker. which is basically a struggle with one’s conscious . A wife cheats on her husband and No that’s not her problem, its what comes next on her way to hopefully beat her husband home.

Creepshow 3

find where to JustWatch sadly its not available for free and only seems to be available on Indieflix. Looking up on Amazon, not available on prime and the only options for video are astronomical! I saw $40 and up! Trying to open the movie to play it I get an error message after I sign up. There are 3 subscription plans starting at $4.99  (after a 7 day trial) or $50 a year. Yeah I think I may do that trial and Un-sub right after I watch.

The opening is a crappy computer animation and all i’m thinking is someone got the rights to make a 3rd film…they are not helping themselves with that intro. F on that.

Alice

Girl walking home on her phone talking about hates her neighbors and can’t wait to get out of there. She gets home and everyone is gathered around, and her dad is fiddling with a universal remote . When he clicks a button and the phone doesn’t work, then she has a new family. With each zap of the remote she becomes physically deformed.  (is this supposed to be moral of the story she’s as ugly on the outside now as she is on the inside?)   When her hand as a burn or whatever that’s supposed to be the make up goes up to her wrist maybe a little past and just stops suddenly, even looks like some of it was folded down.  Not memorable in the least.

The Radio

A security guard lives in a slum of a house. He buys a radio off some homeless man who yells alot (and for no reason) and soon the antenna and a knob breaks off. When he goes to trash it, it starts talking to him.

This was a big YAWN

Call Girl

Some frat looking guy calls Rachel, a call girl. He says his family is out of town, meanwhile they walk right by them or whoever that was. can’t say much else or it will ruin the suspense (if there is even any in that) and the cool part.

This is the best so far. And may end up being the memorable one.

The Professor’s wife

More comedic than anything. Think Stepford wife meets horror with Lots of blood I promise that and its a bit of a cliche

Haunted Dog

This may end up being a little memorable.

Some A-hole cuts in line at a hot dog stand. When karma tries to get him, after dropping the hot dog on the ground, he gives it to a homeless man.  This guy we find out is supposed to be sentenced (for some reason) to work at the free clinic for 30 days. He’s a pill popper too, just no idea what kind he’s taking.  He keeps seeing the homeless man.

Honestly was it Romero and King who originally started this, well if I was King, I would sue the pants off everyone on the creative team for this.

While I’m not crazy about remakes and reboots, there are just some that

  1. Do not ruin the original story
  2.  Is on par with (or better than)  the original
  3. Good or interesting (as original?) Stories/plot lines
  4. Someone attached to them that I respect in some fashion
  5.  TBD

Creepshow on shudder and on AMC  fits all those points for me.

Greg Nicotero, yes executive producer and FX make-up extraordinaire of The Walking Dead, has brought Creep show back with 12 more terrifying terrors,.

At the start seeing this character on the left, I didn’t remember him from the movies. They start with some comic frames morphing into ‘live action’ that character on the left. I don’t know if it ever was originally a comic, but it sure reminds me of one of the Tales from the Crypt characters. Definitely NOT the crypt keeper or the witch, I can’t think of the name of the other one let alone find it. Ah that’s it… I think its the Vault Keeper from the Vault of Horror series of the comics

*Gray Matter Deals with Alcoholism and even depression I see some of my experience in that.

a son who wants his father to stop drinking has to bring him home beer every day on the way home from school.  His father making empty promises to stop.  We see the last case in the store of dad’s brand has mold on it  (I wouldn’t even get it)  As the story goes on the father withdraws more and more. In the end he reminds me of a part Stephen King had in (not sure if it was the original Creepshow movie  or another anthology movie altogether.  But in the end its basically look at the monster you have become

The house of the Head   The adorable actress that plays Judith from The Walking Dead has a nice big old fashion doll house.
She’s lucky there’s even a store in town that sells the dolls for it. (I remember when I had one, if one my dolls went missing.. we’d ask my cat TomJerry if he knew where it was and he’d show us!!!  Now the little girl notices there’s something odd happening with her house. She leaves the dolls in one room and when she looks away or comes back from dinner or school they are in different rooms.  I didn’t really get why or how the head was happening (though maybe an inkling) but where did the head come from?

*Bad wolf down  A platoon of American soldiers during World War 2 (why are they even called Nazis? Who came up with that word?)  This is one of the memorable ones… and all puns intended Ha ha “Dog Soldiers”
The finger is it going to be the middle finger? Little fact (I think) the middle finger I found out came from the French archers. When they would loose an arrow they would flip the bird at the British. The british armies would cut off the middle fingers of the french (archers only?)   during the war.
Oh the guy from Supernatural and Znation  is in this. He collects found objects. He finds a finger and accidentally spills Harrow’s beer on it (yes the same fave beer of the Dad from the Grey matter episode). It seems to suck it right up. It grows and reminds me of a cross between Alien Xenomorph and Pumpkinhead.

*All Hallow’s Eve “pull on your masks Boils and ghouls” Again looks like vault keeper is creepshow actually stories from Vault of horror? (which in a sense means Tales from the crypt) a bunch of kids go trick or treating they swear for the last time. I like this one cause it felt sort of like one of those Are you afraid of the Dark episodes. I think there’s some sort of urban legend about these kids taking kids, and maybe they are ghosts, or is this just a halloween prank?
The Man in the Suitcase   OMG what an idiot you didn’t even double check to make sure the bag was yours?  OMG is this guy a contortionist or is this CG (or a bit of both?)  Moral of the story… don’t be greedy or selfish

The companion WHOA that is a SCARY scarecrow. What is that thing on the Scarecrow, I can’t make it out, at first I thought it was an open jaw… so far from it.  A widowed man makes a companion to ease his loneliness.  Of course things don’t go quite as planned. Not one of my top favorites but an Honorable mention esp. for that creepy ass Scarecrow
Lydia Layne’s Better Half  oooh Ghostly This one reminds me of something that would be in one of the Anjaan episodes I watched on NEtflix. Its Indian urban legends.

Night of the Paw A Funeral home owner losing money makes a wish.  Something of a cliche story, ‘The Monkey’s paw”

Times is tough in Musky Holler – with David Arquette  NOT one of my favorites however some citizens including one of authority seems to have broken some rules and are  getting their punishment. Seated in Chairs that are on chains. I was trying to figure out what that would be about before hand but at least it was something original for me.  A human head wack a mole? Bowling? or billiards?  Are they vampires? Then why are they not smoking or burning in the sun. Zombies?

Episode 6… SKINCrawlers  Opens on a skeleton and warning if you don’t like spiders… LOOK AWAY.

It mentions something about skin deep, which sounds familiar I wonder if its the name of a past Creepshow title (from the first movie, or orginal series). THis one was a bit nauseating.

*By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain  a father goes missing after hunting down a sea monster. Like father like daughter; the teen girl finds what her father was after.

Season 2

I saw some ads for the new season and was a bit sad as I didn’t have extra money to subscribe to shudder for a month. LUCKY ME!!! AMC is airing it again. So anyone who works for any TV/Cable Stations that get the rights to air the streaming shows… THANK YOU!

The new season starts off with is that Kevin Dillon? in episode 1

Model Kid

A young boy who loves monsters like the Gilman, The mummy and so on who to his mother calls them his friends. He gets bullied in school for liking them. His mother is supportive and sadly has cancer. They watch movies on a reel to reel projector, and he puts together and paints models of the Monsters. His mother tells him his Aunt and Uncle are moving in until they get back on their feet and while she goes for another round of chemo. The young boy is not happy, as he doesn’t like his uncle and I don’t blame him. The uncle is an ass and no better than a school bully to the kid. Some how one of the monsters comes to life, Then in a dream, His mom hands him one of his monster magazines (comics) and there he finds ‘The Victim’ model he does not yet have. I enjoyed this not only for the story but seeing all the posters etc. around the boy’s bedroom.

Season 3

May have mentioned before the likness to tales from the crypt with the magazine (esp. Style and layout)

6 episodes

1 Mums, queen bee

Mom decides to go to visit family, and take her son jake. Her husband is waiting at door with reinforcements, obviously the abusive type. She called him a supremist and terrorist, so my judgement is pretty much right in the money, speaking of which finds some in the suitcase with a clip around One bundle.
He says he’s going to make a citizen arrest. Plus she’s had mental and alcoholic problems.
Something happened when they take her away in the pickup.

I have a feeling the brunette knows what’s going on or something ‘nefarious’ minor or major.

While asleep the son dreams the mother Is dead.

The kid plants some seeds (mums)
When they grow they look like there’s hair on them

In queen bee there’s A diva singer that has gone into labor and a gurl big fan.. And 2 friends steal her moms hospital key card to ‘break in’ for some pictures.

A guard finds them an accident and they get away. Doctor etc with green eyes

2 skeletons in the closet, familiar

Skeletons…
A movie prop collector has a museum, the oropsvarebhus fathers legacy. His khan is Bates, always out bidding him. He takes it to far when he (bates) pays for a visit. Specifically to see what’s behind the curtain before the new collection premieres.

There are many identifiable props from (mostly horror movies) some mentions of tv and other genre movies but there’s a Freddy glove (however does not look original to me) saw things from psycho, evil dead and a few other but I’d say best was from phantasm.
I wonder how many were the real thing and others remade(if at all)

Ok that chick did not do the shower Scene well.

Creep show guy at the end lol

Familiar

A couple goes to boones good eye. Some fortune teller, but no site of the person when they walk in.
The actor looks familiar.

The guy is a skeptic, but while reading the girls palm he passes a note to the guy something bad followed him in.

Once home, the door opens of its own accord.
At work his copier prints on its own and the furniture goes ‘paranormal activity’

‘Tsubadya

Some Japanese artist dies and his lawyers have found his lone descendant. But is only to be passed to family.
The kid sells it, and the rich guy at unveiling makes everyone gasp. I bet he released some spirit or demon that was in the painting.

After he’s seeing things, like the subjects of the paintings move or change.

The painting and even a sketch is scarier than the costume. This is where at least some CG should have been used.

Oh this is a good one

Wait HOW

Ragnarok

See the source image

Wherever I originally read the plot summary, it did not sound interesting to me, then I see “based on the Norse myths” and I figure I watch it…so I shall see.

The Viking Ragnarok starts with natural disasters and culminates in the great battle between Gods and Giants

(the gods=order meanwhile the Giants = Chaos often associated with a rash and destructive nature)

I get the feeling however that this is taking place AFTER Ragnarok for some reason.

The series takes place in Edda, Norway which is experiencing warm winters and violent downpours and so seems to be headed for another Ragnarok — unless someone intervenes in time.

Some of Thor’s enemies remain in the guise of humans, the Jutul family (Fjor, Nan, Vidar and saxa). Of course the way old money goes, they own the town as their company is what provides most if not all of the jobs. So how is anyone supposed to fight against that, not to mention the environmental pollution that is killing its citizens in their 30s or 40s?

There a mystery aspect to this along with beautiful cooling views of snow-capped mountains and Glaciers. (quite nice for a summer watch)

Fjor, Turid, Saxa, Gry, Lauritis, & Magne

The day Magne, brother Lauritis and mom move to Edda, Magne helps an old man in a mobility scooter in front of a store. The man’s wife (I suppose) goes to thank him and touches his forehead. I was in the middle of reading the Norse Myths AGAIN (I think this is the 3rd or 4th book I’ve bought) and I had just finished one of the stories which this scene felt very similar to. I think it was the ‘Odin goes a wandering’

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

2018   drama, fantasy, horror

Kiernan Shipka, Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis,Chance Perdomo, Michelle Gomez,Tati Gabrielle, Richard Coyle,Miranda Otto, Lachlan Watson

Opening credits look like Archie comics, style and later Riverdale is mentioned; so I’m guessing one of those writers (or the same one) worked on both, or I should say the same artist.

After her parents her father being a high priest, and mortal mother die in a plane crash, Sabrina is raised by her Aunt Zelda and Hilda, witches of the church of night.

Sabrina is days away from her ‘sweet’ 16…dating mortal Harvey, hanging out with her friends Roz and Susie.  And raising feminist hell at school. All in a days work. This Sabrina’s so called ‘sweet 16, is bound to be a hellish one. As if being a teen isn’t hard enoughgoing to one school.  She has to go to 2, and basically ends up with 2 lives.

Summer of Netflix (2018)

While I was looking after my Aunt’s house in July I started my Netflix summer vacation. Trying to binge as many of the original shows and some movies as possible. I still have many others (like some of the Marvel series to watch but I’m not going to get through everything by the first week of October. I thought I’d also re-watch the first 3 seasons of American Horror Story, as Season 8 deals with Murder house & Coven. Also watched the first 3 seasons of Goosebumps (a show I enjoyed in my teens, I’ll be working on a classic Cuts for that)
I’ve temporarily canceled streaming as the regular fall shows are starting to come back will pick up watching the rest during the holiday hiatus so I don’t have to deal with all those holiday repeats. Speaking of which, I always wonders…..WHY are there not more Jewish, Kwanzaa, Yule/solstice stories? And WHY are those that celebrate these (and others that are not Christmas) not making a big fuss of not having their own holiday entertainment?
Anyway so this is one extra long post. Hope you enjoy
Here are my recommendations, (some are links to the individual review)

Altered Carbon

Altered Carbon

Suicide Squad’s Joel Kinnaman

Biggest Lavish Netflix series ever -Enteretainment Weekly

Set in the futuristic world of the acclaimed sci-fi novel which you probably haven’t heard of where people in a sense, live forever. It’s based on the Richard K. Morgan 2002 cyberpunk novel set 300 years in the future when your Mind & soul can be put in a new body by a digital implant called a ‘Stack’. The body’s are called ‘sleeves’ which you can get a free one or for whatever the price, you can buy a better one.

Joel’s ‘sleeve’ character is brought back with Takeshi Kovacs an elite soldier along for the ride. He is brought back after a centuries-long  to investigate rich guy Laurens Bancroft’s murder, who is now in the sleeve of James Purefoy.

Roseanne revival

See the source image

The original series ran from 1988 – 1997. It is one of the shows I am so glad they brought back  (yes I know I should be strung up and tortured for saying that, but sometimes, I do wish for curiosity sake or because I really miss ‘family)’. Now I’ve been watching the old episodes on one of the tv stations when I catch it on and aside from the 90s fashion, they are still funny. Ones I have seen umpteen times I still laughed at.

The coming attractions for the reboot sounded like Connor clan, just older. Yes the original cast is back even double Becky! Which there is a joke in the pilot episode of the new 2018 reboot. However, in the pilot of the reboot I did miss Johnny Galecki and Mark. In the new series, Darlene is I forget if its divorced or separated from David but he will be back for an episode however being as the actor Glenn Quinn that played Mark died in 2002, Mark is dead on the show. I didn’t hear how Mark supposedly died yet though.

Will

TNT  Mondays @ 10     Laurie Davidson, Olivia DeJonge , Mattias Inwood,Colm Meaney     IMDB

In the first episode ‘London Calling’ belts out and my isn’t the market a colorful place.

So what do you get when you cross Shakespear and punk? WILL

In a sense it sort of reminds me of the modern Romeo and Juliet movie from the 90s that Leoardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes starred in. Only this, is supposed to be in the time Will lived but has modern accents. Some of those outfits are too bright for commoners to afford IF even there were colors as vivid back then for clothing. The Audience during the plays look like they should be part of blood drive …or comic con with their colorful hair or face paint (maybe you could include Face-off in there too) Just that alone is entertaining.

I thought this was going to be a horrible bore that, the pacing would be slow and all but its actually enjoyable.

If that is what the theater make up really looked like back then.. then I think someone’s cosmetic bag melted on all their faces. (Either that or the toxic crap joker and Harley fell into)

I like the costumes and especially the one (in the first or 2nd episode) of the guy that I take is supposed to own the theater.

Definately a cool ‘Punkspeare’? eh doesn’t sound so good but I think you may enjoy it if you give it a few episodes.

Blood Drive

Oooh Wee! Aquaman (from Smallville) is in this. First when I saw the ad for ‘Blood Drive’ I thought the night on Syfy was going to be called that (like when they made Thursday nights Throwback Thursdays). Honestly I swear I come up with an idea, I don’t even have to write it, it just happens! Not sure when or where I got the idea but I think at least while trying to watch Madmax once I wondered why they didn’t try using blood as gas. But I am stoked for watching this and I wonder if every Wednesday night they will have a ‘Grindhouse’  type feature to show this summer.

So this is supposed to take place in 1999 in the California territories.

Now that’s  a fuel (adrenaline) injection. Every time she  calls Arthur,  Barbie… I go to check hearing aids I don’t need. Forget Barbie that is one Ken doll I want to play with.

So in a sense it is a movie (or at least plays like one…) but its an hour long TV series.  I was very much enjoying watching it then the episode was over… I nearly threw a fit so in a sense I’m a little disappointed, but I think that’s because I thought it was some movie. Like a grind house feature each week.

The series will be 13 episodes long, so why not show 1 1/2 hours a week no biggie would love to watch this at Alamo Draft house! They even have the fake commercials like the Robert Rodriguez 2007 Planet Terror/Deathproof movies (I’ve got the steel boxes of those, was awesome to see in the theater) which had the Machete commercial which became an actual movie in 2010!

I am really loving this series and its only 2-3 episodes in. I get so wrapped up in it that when it ends I’m confused like wait its not an hour yet! Look at the clock and damn! the hour is over, it feels like the show is only 15 minutes. I am SO adding it to the library (just not sure if Physical or if it will be the first for the digital collection yet!)

This has everything!

The story revolves around a race but I’m not telling you the Race is all about nor prize! Also if you didn’t see in the

trailers… Not only does it mostly revolve around the race, but a cop gets caught and is forced to participate; his partner on the other hand well I sort of know what’s going on with him, but also not. Arthur (aka Barbie) has noticed this company ‘Heart’ has theirs in everything, even seem to ‘own’ the cops.  The Race is put on by what I would describe as a mix up of Voltaire(the music artist) Penguin (as in the villain),  and I forget the first character/person that popped into mind.  Its got Gore, its got bad ass cars, episode 2, I already know is super memorable and can see it going to be a high favorite (of mine) of the season!

The show is ‘sick’ in a good and bad way but hey that’s  what Grindhouse is. It’s basically a proverbial middle finger to hollywood (when they aren’t the ones who actually make it!) They are different and don’t seem to abide by the normal hollywood rules. I wish it had started as a feature in the theater or being its a series first… maybe in some way it can get a feature movie. I will have to suggest the idea to Alamo Draft (my local one as well as if there’s a way to drop a note to the head) to find out if they can show it in the theater! This is definitely worth a theater binge if they ever do one make sure it IS at Alamo Draft house (if you have one) and order the refillable soda & Popcorn!

A+

Definitely a nominee for the Avatar Awards

Here’s another opinion i came across

Legion

FX     Wednesdays 10pm   Marvel         Dan Stevens Rachel Keller, Jean Smart,

Set sometime in the 1960s or 70s  by the looks of the styles.

Dan Stevens plays psychic David Haller who’s as usual in the X-men world his powers are both curse and gift. His father is supposed to be Charles Xavier The X-men’s Professor X!  It’s not a direct adaptation of the Marvel comics but it’s a trippy mesmerizing head trip that will stick with you.

David has some mind blowing explosive psychic powers which are equating into madness so because of his gifts, he is thought to be schizophrenic.

The nature of David’s psyche is that different people occupy his mind and have an influence on him at any given time, and so is institutionalized.  Where he meets and falls for fellow mutant Syd.  Since she does not like to be touched (because of her power) it’s a romance of the mind. David is rescued by therapist Melanie Byrd from the mental hospital and Division 3 (who the hell is division 3?) agents.

While Therapist Byrd insists what he sees is real,  the way it is filmed David nor the viewers are not so sure, aside from the maze of disturbing memories, or are they memories? Could they be future prognostications or a mind made mad from powers he has yet to learn to control?  How can one tell if we are in his reality or in his head? It’s not easy to watch, you need to give it your utmost attention to keep up. I usually put down my kindle to watch this being if you play games etc while watching it, you will likely need to re-watch it again.

He acts as both a force for light as well as dark at the same time in different ways. This is definitely a different type of ‘superhero’ show, and a break from all those others  DC or Shield wise. (Where do I get that psychotic bedtime story book?)

I would give a Binge worthy but the way the shows plays out, Your head might explode after watching 2-3 episodes in a row if you do!

Imaginary Mary

The half hour Comedy stars  Jenna Elfman, Stephen Schneider,Nicholas Coombe, Matreya Scarrwener, Erica Tremblay and last but not least the voice of Imaginary Mary… Rachel Dratch.

The coming attractions would have me laughing when Bunny (the youngest daughter) walks into the mail box and Mary yells “You broke it”  and as many times as that came on, it still tickled and made me laugh.

The premise as you may already know is Alice (Elfman) is dating Ben who decides he wants her to meet the kids. With this her old imaginary friend Mary pops back into her life so she can deal. Imaginary Mary, is cute and funny but I find her to be a little of a bad influence on Alice…but realy… can you be a bad influence on your own self?!

Bunny the little one, is so cute and too sweet she gives me that ate too much candy on Halloween sort of tooth ache. I think you’ll just want to give her a big hug.

At first the kids want nothing to do with Alice, though the son Andy does go to her to ask for advice like in the third episode as he wants to audition for the school play…Grease. His father is concerned as Andy gets really down on himself everytime his expectations are not met. The father eats his feelings worse than some of us women do! I can understand having some icecream after a break up to cool you down (from possibly making an ass of yourself) but why eat your feelings when if you have a shot or just get blitzed with a few drinks you wouldn’t be putting on the calories? (Plus the added incentive of a possible  puke fest afterwards to rid more calories)   and NO i’m not saying you should do this… you should find a ‘healthy’ way to deal like a workout, a punching bag, writing  etc. My ‘therapy’ hobby is usually some form of crafts. Also writing.

The first 1 or 2 episodes I watched one after the other, (on our free on demand channel)  and I’d say its definitely bingeable.  I think I have a few episodes to catch up with as well (I always forget what day or station it’s on) which is ABC

So definitely give  it a chance I think you’ll have a few laughs.
