Ghost in the Shell

2017     BR    PG13    1:49

The lines were blurred between human and robot with the technological advances of the future. people getting robotic upgrades and now the new body piercing (for lack of a better example). The corporation Hanka will combine the 2 best parts of human and machine together. The Human brain in a cyborg.

Major played by ScarJo is a cyborg police officer heading up the task force to foiling cyber criminals.  There’s things she sort of remembers but does not know what they are, until she meets a previous ‘experiment’ of Hanka and earlier version of what she is. Who enlightens her how to remember. Her ‘Gliches’ are a past memory.

I like the cinematography and damn if you don’t watch this on at least a blu-ray if  you don’t have somethng better like the 3d or 4k screens etc you are missing out! I enjoyed the holograms around what I would perceive as (was it Tokyo?)  the city’s time Square like area.  There were Fish swimming in the street! Instead of Billboards they have giant holograms on top of buildings and just like we are with our own current advertising, these people are just as jadded.

Now I know the movie is likely 75%  CG FX but the guy borg gives me the heebie jeebies its so freakish looking (and I do not use that term lightly)  definately a case for that future’s Frankenstein monster!

As for the movie it does make an impression but I think the Visuals take away from whatever there was of a story. The story which I didn’t see that there was much depth to.

Life

Rated R     2017   BR  1:43  Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal,  Rebecca Ferguson ,Hiroyuki Sanada

A crew of the international space station discovers a one celled organism in a sample collected from Mars.

The ‘creature’ which starts out looking like I guess a tape worm, starts to show signs of freakish intellect.

Apparently this thing is likely the reason Mars looks like a desert wasteland.

They keep showing a rant in a cute but oppressive harness, looks weird like they are sort of going to take it for a walk but the harness is more like a handcuff. Sadly I think I know what the rat’s fate will be.  The tape worm alien breaks the guys fingers and hand and …well no child or one with a love of animals should see what happens next. Traumatizing.

WEll Reynolds in a sense just got Probbed, (and was so wishing for a deadpool quip for it) each time it grows it looks like something else… now it sort looks like a star fish maybe more like a space squid…and can even camouflage itself (or make itself invisible altogether who knows) .. talk about an invasive species!

Its also like a shark and can smell blood from however far away (I think it was on the other side of the space station) I wasn’t expecting that ending! certainly that was a twist. But when or how did that happen? ‘Trick shots’

It was ok for a watch at least it didn’t take the form of the others like the alien in Dreamcather and I can’t think of the other title, but you get the point.

Ready Player One Database

You could say this is Anorak’s Database.

I know the last column or 2 have gone out of the margins, but until I figure out a different way to set this up, it is the best I can do for now.

December 2017 I am currently rereading the book so I may be able to figure out a different way of setting this up. I may re-write the whole table in word and then I can just add it to Evernote and include the link for what does NOT fit in the margins or maybe I will do sections.

Hunters

hunters-syfySyfy    monday @ 10 (est)  Nathan Phillips, Julian McMahon,  Shannon Berry, Britne Oldford,  Mark Coles Smith   (more…  IMDB)  based on the book alien hunter

Nathan Phillipps plays FBI agent Flynn Carroll whose wife is abducted which leads him to a secret government unit assembled to hunt  the shady group of international terrorists that may or may not be human.

Regan a member of this secret unit is a hunter, and now that Flynn has found out…has a problem with her on the team. Regan also has what looks like a scar on (or near) her  inner elbow. Flynn has a scar in the same area (but can’t recall if same arm) first I took it that he got hurt while on duty with the FBI or while he was deployed. Now it seems as though you might be a Hunter without knowing that you are!

There’s a noise the Hunters make that I swear the Predator is going to show up any minute! (then after thinking that I saw an article Arnold wants to do another Predator!DOH!) Binge worthy

So far I am sticking with it. The episodes go by pretty fast and there’s plenty of action and mystery to keep my attention. I think its even safe to give it the Binge worthy! seal of approval!

We get a flashback of Regan as a little girl in the 3rd episode as well as a trip to the jungle.

“They take the ones you love”… but WHY?!  Are those people aliens too? bu then so far it seems only women have been taken so are they trying to take over the world by impregnating all of the women?

Maybe we’;ll get some answers in the 4th episode being as Julian McMahon seems to be captured in the coming attractions (and man  I hope they had him dye his hair grey cause unlike it does for Eric Dane.. it’s so NOT working for Julian! (who I still think ‘Cole’ from Charmed when I see him)

2015  PG13 1:46  blu-ray

stars Adam Sandler, josh Gad, kevin James & Peter Dinkladge  Jane Krakowski with a cameo from a Ghostbuster and ‘The Bean’

Aliens attack using the beloved games of 1980’s arcade fame for their offensive onslaught. Former ace gamer Sam Brenner (Sandler) is called in by longtime friend President Will Cooper (played by James)  to take on the E.T.s who are using favorite shows and music icons (like Fantasy Island or Madonna) to send their messages.

Oh Got Headroom?!!? never thought  he would show up in this. (no not an arcade character was on TV way back in the day as well as a TV Movie) So some of the game characters I don’t remember let alone what game they were from. (Like the blond chick I never heard of that game or character)  I do like the use of the mini coopers in the movie as the Pac-Ghosts. Oh and the ‘trophies’ but I wonder what game that dog & whatever it was with was from. I am disappointed as my favorite game was not represented… where’s my Rampage?!?!?

Adam Sandler in this I can tell what people are complaining about with his acting lately. he’s like a corpse only you could get more of a rise out of a zombie! my Father and I enjoyed watching the movie i don’t know if we laughed at the punchlines we were supposed to laugh at or not though we probably had a laugh at some other things. Like our favorite little Orange ‘cheese ball’ who I was surprised to hear spoke in this.  Kevin James I think needs a health check as he always seemed like he was out of breath, not sure if that was just because he plays the pres. or if he needs a serious check-up around the belt. Josh Gad I don’t like period and I think this is the first movie I’ve seen with him in it. I don’t know if Sadler wrote or anything other than acted for the movie but he & James sounded like they were bored. This was supposed to be a nostalgic romp especially with Chris Columbus directing, WTF went wrong  (other than some if not all of) the acting?  Glad I didn’t see this one in the theater.

Stay tuned at the end they show parts of the movie in 8-bit video game graphics.

over all a C+ for me

TV Tuesdays- Dark Matter

Syfy Fridays

Nice little fight to start the Premier, lasts a minute or 2. From the fact that none of the characters  can remember who they are or any other memories , and wake up on a ship in space my theory is it’s some sort of prison ship. So they go Scooby gang and split up to explore and some come to find skills they didn’t know they possessed, one’s a hacker, another seems to be an electrician, another martial arts. Oh yeah and the doctor on Lost Girl, plays an android in this!  The girl with the green blue hair seems familiar but I can’t place her. one time I thought it was ‘Beauty’ from Once upon a Time then I thought the actress from Orphan Black (which wouldn’t be possible because likely both shows film at the same time) and others would pop into mind but no takers. The characters decide to name themselves by what order they woke up.

Number one is Marc Bendavid who is apparently the eye candy for the show looks familiar and to me looks a cross between Cam Gigante, James Maslow and maybe a little Max Theroux) and being I was already going on IMDB to write the review turns out he’s been on Bitten before.

Number 2  is played by Melissa O’Neil  who has few credits to her resume  but I do see a 2005 Canadian Idol listed  and 2011 Dark Chronicles which sounds familiar but can’t recall if it’s a show and what station it was on. She comes out kicking ass and asking questions later. She also ‘somehow’ knows how to work the ships controls.

Three played by Anthony Lenke was on Witches of East End White House down Flash Point (that might be the one I think I  recognize him from the ads for it) Warehouse 13 and quite a few others. No idea what his purpose is yet, other than to maybe be the ass of the group, that no one likes.

The android is in fact played by Zoie Plamer or Lauren on Lost Girl. The android can manually fly or repair the the ship,  through it’s ‘mind’, or manually do it to show (and with her and maybe another one or 2 of the cast members I think I can ssay Syfy like CW is starting to recycle their actors!

Alex Manari Jr. who plays character 4 is a skilled martial artist and you may remember him from his appearance on FX’s The Strain as Carlo or 2014’s Robocop.

So on to number 5 the Blue/green hair girl (yes i’m obsessed with the hair color) She played Bree in the Twilight Saga (eclipse) was in Cabin in the Woods and though I saw the previous 2…AH! she was the little girl in Silent Hill, Jodelle Ferland. She’s the electronics/electrician expert  and last we have number 6 played by Roger R Cross who has been on The Returned, Arrow and The Strain plus a whole lotta video games! He looks like he’s the muscle other than that not sure if they revealed his skill.

They end up landing at a farm and getting some food. One thinks they are supposed to help them and by the end of the show we find out Who and, or what they really are, and why  and from the sound of the ‘We’re dangerous’ that’s said in the commercial I doubt my theory is far off

The show felt like it was over in a blink, which by me mean good story telling. In other words, they aren’t boring us, and the show moves along smoothly plus that there’s just enough action and such to keep you entertained.  I just hope when KillJoys start, that they’re not going to be the same type of show.
