Maze Runner

Sci-fi, Thriller, Mystery   1:53

I’m going to have to re-watch the first one, as I thought I had posted a review for it, but it came out the same year I started this blog.

I can tell you I remember the lush green glade, and those things in the maze as well as a scene after.

I’ll post whenever I catch it again.

My original Maze Runner Scorch Trials review

2015 PG-13  2:12

So this was my 2nd time watching because it was so long ago that I saw the movie and the Death Cure came out (getting to that in a bit)See the source image

I don’t remember hearing or seeing anything about solar flares while watching it the 2nd time. They are taken to what is supposed to be a way station, where some never leave. There’s  also some things in cylindrical tanks that remind me of a nautilus.

There’s some zombie like people but movie too fast to be zombies, but I have yet to hear what the virus in this is called. Its sort of seems like the rage virus of 28 days later.

The group is looking for (i think it was) the Red hand (some rebellion sounding name)

There’s nothing really in it that is memorable like the maze and ‘glade’ of the first movie. All I remember is that guy that plays little finger from Game of Thrones. Does he play an ass in everything he’s in? (Not sure if you’d call him that in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword  but maybe more a ‘donkey’ ass  (a minor side version compared to his character in this, and as for his GOT character he’s a manipulative one so that would be the in-between version of these two)

The only thing really memorable to me (right now) is that the person who found a way to delay the ‘virus’ well let’s just say it kills a bit of hope for a possible cure.  I Haven’t read the books, but I’d hope there’s something better in this book than the movie, which as I said in the first review seemed like filler. The only semi-memorable part was the storm coming in, but then again was watching this while we were having a rainstorm which was thunder and lightning, but now way as spooky and as scary as this one.But I do love when something I’m watching and life sort of coincide.

Death Cure

2018  2;22

Soo much better than that sophomore slump in the scorch.

They’ve got one last chance to find a cure for the ‘flare’ pandemic. They call those without immunity to it cranks (yeah I guess they do look like drug addicts in a way)

Thomas employs a daring strategy in the face-off against Wckd (Wicked) the organization doing the experiments for a cure.

Meanwhile, Brenda is still doing well on that concoction made from Thomas’ blood, no side effects and so far has not needed a booster.

I think this has plenty of elements to interest all genre fans.

For fans of the first movie, there’s a surprise appearance, that even I was surprised as once I saw I remembered what happened to them in one of the previous movies.

I very much enjoyed one ‘stunt’ toward the end of the movie. I’ll just say Bus + Giant Crane = awesome!

The Osiris Child

sci-fi  action adventure drama   2017   not rated   1:39 Kellan Lutz, Daniel MacPherson, Luke Ford, Isabel Lucas, Bren Foster

This sci-fi thriller is set in an unstable future where there’s another inhabited planet which has been or is being terraformed for humans.

Oh that’s a cool flyer not sure if I should call it a plane or what though. Kellan Lutz playSee the source images one of the prisoners that is set free from some accident. There is a big cover up about it by Exor, those in the sky as to what the prisoners were working on. They say the prisoners broke out and took hostages. To get rid of the threat the higher-ups decide to blow the area up. Lt. Kane (MacPherson) goes on a mission to save his daughter who is in the line of this attack.

Along the way there’s an attack by the monsters. Let’s just say some gnarly looking  not so Teenage ninjas but definitely mutant turtles on steroids.  I won’t even ruin it with including a picture.

I liked the landscapes and certain aspects of the movie. (rented from Netflix on disk) I wouldn’t say it was actually a good movie, not sure if I’d say its bad. It was one of those movies that was recommended by what  I watch and I saw Kellan Lutz in it and I jsut like hi in action roles. So if its your taste I think you’d like it otherwise to each his own. Though I do hope you will watch for the overall experience (especially if you have Blu-ray or if available on 4k)

Void

2017   NR  1:30    horror/mystery/sci-fi      starring Ellen Wong, Aaron Poole, Kenneth Walsh

Cop Daniel Carter spots a man that’s run out of the woods and collapses and is bloody. He calls into dispatch that he’s bringing the guy to the hospital. Inside, things get weird. One of the Nurses gets scissor happy, there’s some cult gathering outside, and one hideous transformation that at the time, I had no idea where it came from.

I’m thinking this is sort of like The Thing or DreamCatcher considering that transformation.

That was a weird one. I don’t know what to say about it. I didn’t hate it, I was interested in it and it didn’t

Black Panther

2018

2 hours 14 minutes

Genre:    Action, adventure,sci-fi

Directed by Ryan Coogler

stars Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira,Florence Kasumba, Winston Duke, Martin Freeman, Forest Whitakaer, Andy Sirkus, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright

I was reading Entertainment Weekly’s interview with the ladies of Black Panther (#1502  Feb 16 2018) and I think it was the Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira that said

Amai – African word of respect (or its respect for elder women) I think all women are considered mothers even if they are not. (or something like that)

Chadwick Boseman – T’Challa   is King and the nation’s protector asBlack Panther

Danai Gurira -Okoye  the General in charge of Wakanda’s defense and head of the all-female ‘Dora Milaje‘ secret service

Lupita Nyong’o- Nakita who steals the king’s heart and Wakandan spy

Letitia Wright –  Shuri , T’challa’s little sis  and a sort of female Tony Stark as she’s the Vibranium Gadget maker

Angela Bassett – Ramonda the Queen mother

Forest Whitaker – Shaman Zuri      Forest Whitaker’s ‘Black Panther’ Role Has a Big Twist

Michael B. Jordan- Killmonger

Andy Serkis- Ulysses Klaue

Winston Duke-M’Baku leader of the Gorilla tribe

I saw this at Alamo Draft house which had a Black Panther themed specialty menu I forget the names of the items but they were made with African spices. I got the popcorn which was called

‘Niter Nibah’ I forget what the spices were on it (and sadly I cannot find the specialty menu on the Theater website) So I’m not big on hot spices but I do like a little bite on occasion. I had one piece of popcorn and it must have had a mass of the spices on it and I couldn’t eat another piece til my soda came. The last few movies I’ve gone to I guess were on Tuesdays which is discount day and I think before 2pm as they have it at that time where you can talk etc but they don’t put up the pre-show clip show which I really like. It’s one of the reasons I go there for my movies.

Before the movie they had a PSA of sorts with Chadwick boseman who just gives us the staredown, so we don’t use our phones. “I’m watching”

Black Panther takes place shortly after the events of Civil War. Wakanda, the beautiful and technologically advanced (fictional) African nation which has remained isolated from the world will soon be ruled by T’Challa as King.  It looks like a paradise, then you pass through the invisible border and you have an industrial city bigger than New York, Toronto, and any in the state of California put together!

The political story of whether or not to share their knowledge and help struggling countries as well as communities of their African American cousins where Eric Killmonger grew up. In a sense, they are enslaving themselves by not helping the world or sharing (though I understand they wouldn’t want the vibranium getting in the wrong hands).

I’ve heard praise for Eric Killmonger’s antagonist that he is the most layered of MCU villains (besides isn’t he the first human villain?). This is a fight not just fueled by or for power, but for the relationship between Africa and their African-American cousins as well, and rightfully so considering a bit of a twist (that wasn’t part of his origins in the comics)

I saw in the trailer there was a some Lion King looking scene and other’s have sounded not happy with that. Its a spirit world (see the ‘easter egg’ videos below for the name) that when you take the heart herb it not only heals you, gives you strength and speed of the Black Panther but you also are able to speak to your ancestors.

Oh that holographic car chase? How does it happen that it seems to become solid? I’ll let you think about it until you see the movie if you haven’t already.

The movie also throws out political opinions on current events as one of T’Challa’s guards (I think Danai) says

Guns, So Primitive

(frankly, I agree also, if you are not the military, police force or something of the like and I see you as a coward. I don’t need a gu In as when need be I  can be QUITE resourceful)

I have to give a thumbs up to the Costume Designer Ruth E. Carter designed the Futuristic but ‘ancient’ traditional (fictitious) African nation from researching not only African tribal fashions from around the continent but patterns, colors, and silhouettes.   Check out some of the awesome costumes here  I’d like to see something about those weapons esp. those ‘frisbee’ disks.

I would love a necklace that has an outfit in it for emergencies.

Andy Serkis is hysterical in the interrogation room, well for us he is, for him he’s I have no words but if the character is on something, Id like some of that happy juice!

And T’Challa has a cool new catsuit… which looks SO much better than the last batsuit!

A bit of fun at the end and how sad after 10n years of Marvel movies people don’t have a clue to wait til the VERY end of the credits that there’s another scene! SO many people left.

The first easter egg scene I think would have been included in the movie itself, before the end with T’Challa and his sister, the one to really wait for WAS the second one which I was thinking might have something to do with the end of Civil War and a nod to infinity war. And the person was referenced in the movie “Another white boy for me to fix” as said by  Shuri.

Speaking of which I do love the sibling ribbing between she an T’Challa but then again I don’t have siblings myself, tho it’s not a jerky sort of thing it’s done with love and I guess to keep the king grounded.

Oh and I saw the Craaaaziest shield wall in this!

Boseman comes back on after the 2nd(all the way at the end of the credits)  Easter Egg scene  “I’m still watching!”

5 Best and 5 Worst Things about Black Panther from Looper

I found the whole movie to be quite good, though may be missing something. Unlike previous Marvel Movies Killmonger does not seem to get as much face time, though maybe for me, many of his scenes are not really memorable. I remember 2 or 3 only which are pivotal points in the movie.  Also is he the first human antagonist in a Marvel movie (at least from phase 2 on?) The first easter egg scene I agree, was not needed but I wasn’t there for that one I was there for the one I had a feeling would be shown and thankfully staying through ALL of the credits paid off~ I’ll just hint that it was someone put once at the end of Civil War

Possible

And some other fodder

Valerian and the City of a thousand Planets

2017  PG-13 Sci-fi   Comic adaptation    Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Rihanna,  Clive Owen,   Ethan Hawke

IMDB info

Based on a French comic series Valerian (DeHaas) and Laureline are United human federation agents (not time traveling agents as the Netflix sleeve says) and wait UHF.. wasn’t that some frequency or something on the old TVs, and a Weird Al Yankovich song or movie?

The ‘City of a thousand planets’  (population 30 mil and 5000 languages NOT including computer languages) was a space station that was ‘docked’ in Earth’s atmosphere but when it became too big (and heavy) they sent it out into space. We have a beautiful paradise of a Beach world and I want one of those cute little creatures! Oh my.. after what I just saw it do, everyone is going to want one!  One of the ‘fish people’ I guess its royalty or some form of leader reminds me of was it Ramses that was in the movie 300?  Oh man are those multi-colored clouds pretty!

I will tell you right now.. if you do not have an HDtv and at least a blu-ray player (or better) to watch, wait until you do. Rihanna’s “Bubble” character is cool, as well as her part. I enjoyed all the different (and creative) beings in this world although some did remind me of creatures from other movies and shows, one of them I would swear was from Star Wars. I could be wrong on this, as I have not watched the original Star Wars movies in a long time but better to ‘remind me of, than to look just like. If it reminds you of something from some other movie or show then it could have been based on it as the person who created it might be a big fan and wanted to pay tribute to who and what made them want to become a creature designer.

It was no Avatar but there are parts that took my breath away as did Avatar. But man I would love a television screen the size of the wall and a more expensive HD you know the kind that you actually try to reach into the screen to grab a piece of food from cause it looks so real like it’s sitting more in front of the screen than in it. There’s been a few of those when I’ve gone to Best Buy or P.C. Richards that I thought I could reach in and grab or pet whatever was on screen.

Oh and somewhere along the movie I’d swear i saw a Pokemon!

I think I can understand why some (many?) were not happy with it. The fact that the trailers showed us the bright colorful eye-candy parts that one would marvel at, but its not all Pandora and Turoks. They show a dark underworld of the city, just as any other city has. Speaking of Pandora, there were elements of in the MÜL people that reminded me of Na’vi from Avatar.

I enjoyed the mystery of the movie but I still figured out who was behind it first, it was more a matter of why did they do it for me.

Maybe there are a few scenes that run on a little longer than they should. The FX I give an A, Story I’d say a C same for the 2 stars. Overall a B for effort but then I never heard about the comic until now. Not sure if the comic is of the same name but I wouldn’t mind looking into finding one to give a read.

Alien Covenant

2017    R    2:02  sci-fi  Horror  Blu-ray  Michael Fassbender

Easy and Simply belongs in a trash heap.. and am not wasting any more time with this thing than the next few lines.

The 2nd chapter in the Alien prequel trilogy.

The crew of the ship called Covenant’s paradise turns to hell and discovers that the lone survivor of Prometheus is the synthetic known as David.

The beginning is like watching passengers, let me tell you I had to double check the title cause I was experiencing some serious Deja vu~not to mention was just as humdrum of a bore.

Step on spores and the dust is sent flying into a character’s ear and digs in.

There’s nothing really memorable about it except drawings in a room

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2

2017  PG13 2:15  Blu-ray   Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana, Kurt Russell,Zoe Saldana, Batista

I went to see King Arthur aka Charlie Hunnam in the theater instead of this. I’m glad I paid to watch Hunnam and not this. (not to mention I also rented and watched King Arthur Legend of the Sword again before getting this) I still like the other movie better, shame it had to be against a Marvel movie.

Baby Groot breaks it down with an amusing dance number around some creature with a very toothy grin, tentacles, and wait was that…confetti breath?!?!

Star-lord…meet ‘egg’ lord and did I just see HOWARD THE DUCK?!

The ship that comes out of the egg looking ship, looks like some dental mold, that takes the impression of your teeth. man is Ego’s planet pretty but it is no Pandora. Oh and Rooker’s character and that Arrow… Too bad Stephen Amell’s Arrow doesn’t get his own Rooker fin-hawk.

Rocket and the rest of their faces when they jump through space.

I think Quill just outdid Roman Reigns’ Superman punch (you’ll get it when you see it… Pac punch?)

Rocky ‘not raccoon’ cameo

and I’m not one who likes Independence Day because of the fireworks (I don’ mind watching them, don’t want to be around them, most of the time they just don’t impress me and most of all I can’t take the noise.) But these are some Hela pretty ‘fireworks’

Watch ALL the credits there are many Groots! How many are there in all (I lost count)

Yondu’s new ‘hair’ gives him a Unicorn profile

rental special features has a Gag reel on it.

This wasn’t as good as the first one (chalk it up to a sophomore slump, or just a bad story?)

There’s only 3 parts of this movie I remember maybe 4 and I think I have already mentioned them all, oh and then there’s the part toward the end but don’t want to risk ruining it.

but if you already have a Marvel Library going you can order your format here
