The Sick House

2008   NR    Horror  1;40   Gina Philips, Alex Hassell, Kellie Shirley, Andrew Knott

Anna, Played by Gina Philips (Jeepers Creepers)  an archaeologist (student) who excavates a 17th Century plague hospital in England which will be raised the next morning.  She is trying to find a way to save the building (I guess to make it a historic landmark).

When Anna finds an old metal box hidden away in a wall, she unknowingly unleashes the dormant evil spirits of the plague doctors. One in particular, is the brutal Cutter who is supposed to be the ‘Black doctor’ and the worst of them.

A party of four wild friends gets trapped inside and a historic evil ritual is played out with the trespassers as the sacrificial pigs. Now Anna’s project turns into not only trying to save the building from being demolished but finding a way for all of them to get out before they die.

Anna finds some drawings on the walls, which are a clue to what is going on. Are they a sight of things to come. One of the four seems to be displaying signs of the plague, but how or why?

Oh and just a note… there’s a bit of a twist.

First off, why would Anna even go into this place, without a mask first off with all the dust and who knows what lingers in the air? Also where there’s an abandoned building there is likely to be all the sorts of creatures ahem RATS, that would have carried the plague, why do you not have some sort of protective gear on you?

I Saw this once before, (and must have been before I had the blog, or I just didn’t have much to say about it then.  I accidentally rented this time as I was looking for THIS Sickhouse (but can’t find it on Netflix)

Not sure why they were calling it Jigsaw as I heard it was supposed to be called Saw:Legacy When I search the title on it shows this sequel. I thought legacy sounded good for a sequel to a long running franchise (that has not had a reboot, remake etc). I guess with the title ‘Legacy’ that maybe that made it sound like the final installment of the series. So if that’s the case I understand.

I was taking a look at the taglines for the movie, and man do they have a list. Never have I seen that many taglines for one movie before! I even looked up a few movies I could think of off the top of my head and it varies by 1-4 tops.

So after John ‘Jigsaw’ Kramer has been deceased for a decade, he still seems to still be up to his old tricks, mmm make that traps from beyond the grave. Then again, didn’t he say his work would still go on? All the clues point to Jigsaw, I can’t remember did his assistant die in the last one? Could it be her, or a full on copycat?

So this time we play a game with a few bucket heads. As always there’s a reason for their punishment, but what is it this time? What is the one thing they have all done that brings them to this demented ‘tug of war?

I read that Saw 3D (2010) was supposed to be the last of the series, but the studio wanted to reboot it.  a Reboot (I think I’m going to have to define that a little better in my  when is a remake ok (Reboots, remakes and Updates) article ) You see to me for something to be a ‘reboot’ it has to be longer than 7 years sine the last one, also normally there are new cast members so if Tobin Bell is in the movie, then it does not qualify as a Reboot, only another sequel.

Ya know, I kind of was tired of the movies I forget at what point but I do know I only wanted to see Saw 3d because Chester Bennington (r.i.p.)  was in it. this one felt fresh to me for some reason, and I enjoyed watching it. I would say its worth a watch and if you have the rest of the movies already in your library, then this one is a definite. it is a mystery, but at the same time there’s 2-3 red herrings but which of them is it? or is it one of them? I’m trying to remember if any other of the previous movies has a ‘party trap’ as I called this one.

There’s one trap I did love but I really don’t want to ruin that one. Just get the blenders ready to make yourself a drink or smoothie before watching and THAT my friends is one beautiful ‘blood flower’ at the end!  (yes I can have a morbid sense of humor at times)

2017   NR  1:30    horror/mystery/sci-fi      starring Ellen Wong, Aaron Poole, Kenneth Walsh

Cop Daniel Carter spots a man that’s run out of the woods and collapses and is bloody. He calls into dispatch that he’s bringing the guy to the hospital. Inside, things get weird. One of the Nurses gets scissor happy, there’s some cult gathering outside, and one hideous transformation that at the time, I had no idea where it came from.

I’m thinking this is sort of like The Thing or DreamCatcher considering that transformation.

That was a weird one. I don’t know what to say about it. I didn’t hate it, I was interested in it and it didn’t

47 Meters down

Pg-13  1:27  Claire Holt, Mandy Moore

On a Mexican vacation, 2 sisters are trapped at the bottom of the ocean in a rusty sharky observation cage. The Great Whites are circling and oxygen is running out. With less than an hour of air left to solve how to get back to the surface.

Although they were fast, I did love the shots of the sharks. I wonder if they were somehow real, or stock footage or all CG. THere’s not really much of a story aside from that cliche crap, and thank goodness cause if it were any longer, our air would have choked off.  It’s kind of ‘open water’ just under the water, way under. Its really just a cookie cutter shark movie. Only many before it are better I mean even Shark Night has a story, sharknado, well maybe not but its amusing. Jaws kicks all their ass and honestly if you do rent this, just fast forward to where the sharks are and watch them in slow-mo. (cause stupid me forgot to) they looked bigger than the jaws shark though.

And should you ever really go in a shark observation tank, make sure you have some gear. Like a long line, with something like a hook or anchor at the end in case you need to reach something as well as more than 3 flares!

Wish Upon

2017   Horror,  UNrated 1;30 theatrical version  Blu-ray  Ryan Phillippe, Kate Hudson

Teen Claire receives a spooky old domed music box. She tries to open it but can’t figure out how.

After making a wish, the box opens while she slumbers and her wish comes true at the cost of a sacrifice, which the box chooses itself.

I like that gargoyle guardian on the gate where the box is found. ManI would love to just have a weekend at that place to take pictures and explore (and experiment..need to buy ghost equipment first)

I can remember more of this than many of the other horror movies from 2017. Was it good? it was ok.

That was kinda cool, but why not just wish it to destroy itself?

there’s an easter egg,

Will there be a part 2?

The Mummy

2017  PG13  1:50  Tom Cruise  Russel Crowe

Death is but a doorway to new life

We live today

we shall live again

In many forms, shall we return

-Egyptian Prayer of resurrection

To start when this first was announced I thought oh no they are rebooting the Brendan Fraser/ ‘scorpion king’ series. Then when they announced it was the Universal and had Cruise attached that was a total turn off.

After Luke Evans etc did such a great job with Dracula Untold  WHY OH WHY would you ruin Universal Studios’ classics like this?!  Dear Boris Karloff is rolling over in his grave

First off Tom Cruise…ALL wrong for anything in the movie or the extended Universal reboot. Russell Crowe as Jekyll & Hyde, I thought was a fitting and would work. For me he did but I wish there was a little more of him in the movie.

The movie should have had another 30 something – early 40s and not someone that really needs to stay away from action movies now. Tom Cruise has lost a few steps and is wrong for them.

As for THE MUMMY itself, she didn’t even look like one. As soon as I saw the preview of the movie, I knew it would fail.

The movie starts in England 1127 where they entomb the Mummy (I forget her name but it doesn’t matter).

There are crusade knights in a burial chamber that reminds me of a chamber of bullets in as if a giant revolver.

A part I think was supposed to be humorous when we first see cruise falls flat on its face for the whole sequence.

For some reason, this gave me a chuckle. (I’m guessing it was the delivery that helped it)

If an air strike hits, don’t be on top of buildings

In this Dr. Henry Jekyll is a collector of ‘Supernatural Artifacts”  and runs Prodigium.  They should have made a Jekyll &  Hyde movie first besides Fiver Finger Death Punch has a cool song with that title that would fit quite nicely in a soundtrack for the movie!  Plus J & H doesn’t get as much ‘love’ as the other Classic Universal Monsters do.

There’s no spooky tone, or eerieness to this it is definitely NOT worthy of the Universal brand.

If Jekyll turns to Eddie Hyde why not make his hair all crazy looking at least to show the change, at least personality wise?  Instead of just how it was done. It didn’t look like much of a difference.

Skip this and just watch the original one with Boris or watch Dracula Untold. So glad I didn’t pay to see this in the theater

2015, Not Rated, Cyber thriller, Mystery, Balthazar Getty, Timothy Hutton, Cloey Sevginy

Inspired by true events

a group of (spoiled?) pre-teens stays over at a rich friends house, in the middle of nowhere. They play dress up, insult and bully each other while playing some online game.

The opening credits are a quick colorful menagerie of candy-coated graphics (or puke) and names depending on your point of view.

The B.s. graphics are an annoyance to me, and nor does what they do look like a game. It looks more like they are just posting photos to a social account.

The antagonist is not hard to point out. you basically know who it is and way long before the reveal. (Frankly the beginning of the movie I knew who it was.)

More Mystery/thriller than Horror
