When is a ‘remake’ Ok?

and the difference between Remakes, Reboots, and updates.

With many movies from the past like Point Break, Nightmare on Elm Street or Ghostbusters (and some too soon like Spider-man) get one of the three treatments; to which some I don’t know if you’d say were an improvement but some remakes & updates come out to varying degrees of favor and hatred.

I don’t recall what was the first year all these remakes and updates started but I think it was the early 2000s (though I am sure the 90’s even had some as well but was not as vast as it is now.)  There are certain movies we love and just can’t bare to see a different cast or the original being ruined by one of these treatments. Ghostbusters, for instance, shot in the practical age of special FX I think the originals still stand fairly well enough, so if anything and I guess because the sequel was not much liked why not have just set this one up as another sequel instead of ‘rebooting’ the series with what may be a remake or update (or a cross between the 2)

Here I hope to try to clear up the difference between each (or at least in my own view) and figure out a way to decipher when

(and even how) it should be made.  Which is how I’d like to start this and let’s see if I can explain the difference between each.

The Alienist

The Alienist is a mysterious turn of the century period Drama     starring   Luke Evans, Dakota Fanning, Daniel Brühl

Mondays 9pm EST on TNT

The stars have been rarely if ever seen on the small screen.  Actually, I don’t think anyone of them has been aside from when their movies have aired.  Daniel Bruhl is Dr. Laszlo Kreizler an alienist, who may be an intuitively gifted doctor of criminal and child psychology. He is brusque and does not have a filter for brutal honesty, which is he works with the rich playboy Moore.   Evans plays John Moore who is an illustrator drawn into the doctor’s investigation from his gilded wealthy and empty life when Dr. Kreizler has him go check out a murder on the bridge. Dakota Fanning’s Sarah Howard is the (fictional) first woman to work with the New York police. She is the secretary to Commissioner Roosevelt (yes as in who was years away from becoming our president).  The three are enforcement outsiders with their own forensic methods, those of which we use today, however, they do not have official access to the case files which does not make things easy. Enter the brothers Lucas and Marcus Isaacson (played by Douglas Smith and Matthew Shear)  the brothers are I think were the coroners for NYPD but were ‘sidelined’ because they are Jewish.  They help the doctor by doing a post-mortem autopsy on a previous case and bring fresh ideas and a dose of comedic relief to the group.

Syfy    Wednesdays

The Following presentation is RATED

Killer Santas, Drunks A-holes  Sick Jokes Depraved Lobsters, Flying Horses, Weirdos,

Strung Out Unicorns, Cheap Booze, Questionable Hygiene

parental Discretion is advised

for VERY Mature situations.

The series is based on a Bonkers graphic Novel by Grant Morrison, about a former corrupt cop Nick Sax who becomes a hitman. The character is like a walking version of the movie CRANK!

He’s fueled by self-pity drinking and drugs.

Reading a preview from the TV guide, Meloni describes the show as “Roger Rabbit meets Quentin Tarintino

The first scene definitely fits the WTF! Had me cracking up. Meloni’s former detective is in a bathroom looking at himself, and well I won’t ruin it.

Haley goes to some ‘Wishies’ (who reminds me of Teletubbies)  kids concert with her mother, and invisible friend the blue unicorn HAPPY! Typical kid leaves parents side and I’m sure you can figure out the rest. She is kidnapped by a bad Santa (who at first I thought was swamp thing dressed as a decorated tree.

The Scaramucci’s are scheming against the former cop. Man if half the guys in the mob have the looks of most of these guys…I’m in. Oh darn… already a widow!

How many times did he just (possibly) die in the first 17 minutes?Apparently, his superpower is not staying dead.

Happy gives us a dizzying view of the city in his quest to find someone to help him, help save Hayley. When he finds Sacks in an ambulance after a shot of morphine. Whimsical, wacky and dark as well.

So the 2nd episode is much like the first, a crazy WTF! whirlwind of Happy the unicorn trying to get Sax to help him find Haley (and it’s for sort of twist reason). The show is funny, dray and dark humor included, you are not sure if you want to give Meloni’s Sax a beating or have a beer with him.

Unlike Sax, Skip the drugs, just watch the show!  But do enjoy a beer or your favorite beverage

Manhunt: unibomber

Discovery    8 part Limited series      IMDB page

Sam Worthington plays Jim ‘Fitz’  Fitzgerald

Paul Bettany as Ted Kazynski the unabomber

Chris Noth, Jane Lynch,Elizabeth Reaser

Jeremy Boob (who plays one in this a closed minded boob named)  Stan Cole

I sort of remember hearing the TV and radio news reports int he background of what was happening while I was in my teens (oops I just dated myself). Surprisingly the names involved sound familiar which is a surprise as I never listened, (Hey I was a teen with a life usually always just about back out the door the moment I come in… aside from any possible homework which I don’t remember having in H.s. and once out only came home to go to the bathroom or curfew.

While working the case Fitz is the only person that sees codes within the writing and gets so involved in the case he starts losing his family.  He’s the only one that sees the profile for the unibomber is beyond wrong. Of course there’s the close minded ‘boob’ (man I’m gonna have fun with tat actor’s name just feel bad for him for when he was in school!) who has had the FBI following the wrong lead for 2 years!  (Is it wrong for me to want to see the character lose his job?)

So I’m not big on theses old crime stories being made into tv shows or movies being we already had to lie through the endless news special reports and other b.s. fodder that went along with it. This I don’t remember much of, even those some of it I think happened I my teens. As I said there are a few things that sounded familiar.

I think I’ll have to give this a seal of approval, but I’m not sure which. I don’ have a mini series or limited event series as they are calling them now. I thought ‘wortho’ as I call him (Sam Worthington) was great, the series was engaging and after all it was only 8 episodes. So it’s worth a watch.

News 19 and Gift Guide Insert

So I’m back, with a new laptop so hopefully I can get more done, once I get the email read and reviews typed up.

While working on this news issue, a few days after thanksgiving I thought “you know I should set up a gift giving guide”. With this being published on the 30th, I’m not sure if I should as to me it’s a little late. I don’t just shop for the holidays in one month I do so through the year. To me gift giving guides should be published maybe starting in September or the end of October. So here I will make an abbreviated guide for what you may not be watching, but should be. I would like your suggestions as well. But before we get to the Gift Guide Its Here!!
