Manhunt: unibomber

Discovery    8 part Limited series      IMDB page

Sam Worthington plays Jim ‘Fitz’  Fitzgerald

Paul Bettany as Ted Kazynski the unabomber

Chris Noth, Jane Lynch,Elizabeth Reaser

Jeremy Boob (who plays one in this a closed minded boob named)  Stan Cole

I sort of remember hearing the TV and radio news reports int he background of what was happening while I was in my teens (oops I just dated myself). Surprisingly the names involved sound familiar which is a surprise as I never listened, (Hey I was a teen with a life usually always just about back out the door the moment I come in… aside from any possible homework which I don’t remember having in H.s. and once out only came home to go to the bathroom or curfew.

While working the case Fitz is the only person that sees codes within the writing and gets so involved in the case he starts losing his family.  He’s the only one that sees the profile for the unibomber is beyond wrong. Of course there’s the close minded ‘boob’ (man I’m gonna have fun with tat actor’s name just feel bad for him for when he was in school!) who has had the FBI following the wrong lead for 2 years!  (Is it wrong for me to want to see the character lose his job?)

So I’m not big on theses old crime stories being made into tv shows or movies being we already had to lie through the endless news special reports and other b.s. fodder that went along with it. This I don’t remember much of, even those some of it I think happened I my teens. As I said there are a few things that sounded familiar.

I think I’ll have to give this a seal of approval, but I’m not sure which. I don’ have a mini series or limited event series as they are calling them now. I thought ‘wortho’ as I call him (Sam Worthington) was great, the series was engaging and after all it was only 8 episodes. So it’s worth a watch.

News 19 and Gift Guide Insert

So I’m back, with a new laptop so hopefully I can get more done, once I get the email read and reviews typed up.

While working on this news issue, a few days after thanksgiving I thought “you know I should set up a gift giving guide”. With this being published on the 30th, I’m not sure if I should as to me it’s a little late. I don’t just shop for the holidays in one month I do so through the year. To me gift giving guides should be published maybe starting in September or the end of October. So here I will make an abbreviated guide for what you may not be watching, but should be. I would like your suggestions as well. But before we get to the Gift Guide Its Here!!

The Brave Valor of Seal Team

3 different shows, with varying casts. With more or less the same premise. I always wondered why so many shows of the same type had to come out all at once. (I remember one year I think ever Network station and a few cable as well all had the same type.)  This year in a sense, I can sort of understand why. one or 2 may fail and we may be left with one of them or they may all be a hit. (all I ask is if any of them get canned, can the cast(s)  move to the remaining? So with two of the shows starting the same week I’m going to review those two and compare them all to see which I think best. This way if you don’t have the time to watch them all I can at least tell you my choice of  which  is best.

two of the shows premiered in the same week

The first to premier was ‘action/thriller/drama  The Brave which stars  Mike Vogel (Under the Dome)  as Captain Adam Dolton of this special ops field team.  Anne Heche as Patricia Campbell the team’s director and Tate Ellington (Quantico) as Noah Morgenthau  both in the offices and all three are surrounded by a bunch of others I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard of before. This is a  look into the lives and personal sacrifices of our brave military heroes. Juggling civilian life with more of a focus on  the Challenging dangerous missions to save individuals and take down terrorists.

The first episode they are tasked with rescuing a surgeon with Doctors without boarders who is nabbed not for what they originally think, but because she is a surgeon. I thought this was supposed to be a Seal team but I think someone broke out an Army shirt so that’s a no go.  I like the layout of the poster, I see it as showing all the sides of the characters. Profesonal Persona, Friends, mission and so on. To me it tells a story, and shows all the main cast members. So far for me this one is the most believable. Vogel in a sense already played a (former) soldier in Under the dome. Even if he didn’t I say he’s pretty believable at least to this civilian’s eye (let’s just say have had family and might currently still have a few cousins sprinkled through the military!) Feels a little intense at times and worry about (and warming up to) a few characters.

So far in the lead.. I think this one feels like it has more adrenaline in it compared to Seal Team, which comes off feeling a bit tame. Maybe because Seal team seems more family oriented, I’m not sure but I vote to keep watching this one.

 Official site

The next is Seal Team starring David Boreanaz, Max Thieriot,A.J. Buckley, Judd Lormand, Michaela McManus

This drama about the lives of the Elite Navy Seals as we get to see one of them as he goes through training, the big boys planning for as well as executing (sometimes literally) their missions, as well as some civilian life, but there’s more of that (or at least more often)on this show than on the Brave.  Boreanez plays Jason Hayes the big dog, who lost a team member (played by Daniel Gillies aka the suave Elijah from the Originals which plays Nate in this I’m so disappointed he’s not a regular) Michael Rooker  Plays the big Chief who we see watching the training of Thieriot’s character Spencer’s.

The poster/advertisement is too boring looking to me(no matter which you look at), is there supposed to be something in the background? To me looks like it might be desert hills.    The Brave’s advertisement at least shows me more of what the show will be like. I think Seal Team though is supposed to focus a bit more on family and civilian life than the Brave is supposed to. Mission accomplished the guys are hanging out on the beach and the last scene of the first episode is a bit of a cliff hanger.

Compared to The first episode of the brave (so far) this focuses mostly on family,  and some of the members of the Seal team are not as believable as those from the Brave, but that’s just my opinion and from what I’ve seen. Boreanez doesn’t seem to ‘work’ in fatigues, Max Thieriot the runt of the bunch looks like he’s fresh from boot camp(cause he is) and younger here than he did in Bates Motel. I swear you’d think this show was filmed before all his Bate’s scenes! I don’t know why some people look ‘right’ or wrong in Military uniforms to me Not sure if its their build or what. But I can’t help it. (I may not go nuts over people in uniform but I  have  had a lot of cousins in the military as well as VETs father, uncles, grandfather, family friend and older cousins in the Army, Navy, Air Force (Not sure if anyone was in the marines someone might have been in Coast Guard) but I guess The difference between these 2 shows is The ‘Seal team’ look a bit relaxed to me while on missions. Instead of the ‘stiff, alertness’ the Brave put on. On watching episode 2, I don’t like it as much as The Brave. I am trying to give it all the chances I can (especially being ‘Angel’ is in it)

Official site     *  David Boreanaz Learned From The Real Deal For SEAL Team

The October 9th  premier for the CW drama series VALOR  which I think stars Matt Barr  (Sleepy Hallow) as Gallo and Christina Ochoa (of Blood Drive) as Nora only because they are featured quite a bit in the previews plus in the adverts but IMDB’s cast listing does not have them as the first 2 on the main cast   page and from what I saw listed as ‘unknown episodes’. Their starring line is Joey Thurmond, Jared M. Reeder, Cecil M. Henry . This is about an Elite army  helicopter (i never seem to remember the name of them right but I think it’s shadow raiders) unit that perform  domestic and international missions. Something tells me if you watch all the trailers on the CW for the show, that you will have seen the whole first episode (just out of order)

I like the use of the dogs tags for the O. I do think they should maybe have had a chopper in there somewhere being its about some elite helicopter squad (unlike Seal team which has it in one of their posters and they are usually on one of those big cargo planes)  being as most wouldn’t know what the beret on her head is for.  There’s a mystery to this one that starts with he first episode. So I like it for that reason, and frankly in typical CW fashion Matt Barr is really nice to look at shirtless!  The mystery is they are flying a soldier back when their chopper crashes, losing their man. Gallo and Madani are stuck (I forget where it was or what amount of time). The soldier they were flying back had some domino on him before he disappeared. Now others with dominoes have popped up. I don’t think they were all the same numbered domino but I am just curious to what that part is all about. Also they have been trying to rescue a couple of their own mates that were captured. This is obviously an on going story, The Brave as far as I see is mostly a mission of the week, and Seal team has a minor mystery in it about Gillies character there are a few other little on going stories but not like Valor’s and so for the most part is a mission of the week deal as well,

Official Site  Oh and  Matt’s IMDB picture would make you think he’s Chalie Hunnam (even though Charlie Hunam and Travis Fimmel have had Separated at Birth Moments.

Now I know I’m late on this one but I have a good reason on that.

For 1.  My computer died (thankfully it did so the end of October, so I got it in time for my mid November birthday)

  1. I was trying to mull over everything about the shows. They say Seal Team is a hit, but I can’t see how. Yeah its supposed to be the one aimed more at family but I haven’t seen much of that on the show lately.  The only ‘hit’ about it is all the Bones in the Bates basement are probably watching it.

I was all three each week if not live then on demand. As for my choice I say The Brave or Valor. Maybe the story telling is just more interesting on those shows

The World of Vikings (Book Bind)

The Coffee Table Book of the Vikings TV series

I had been coveting this book on Amazon for a  year or so, hoping someone would buy it as a gift. As it’s a hardcover and buying it new I sort of don’t blame them for not getting me a copy, but I wouldn’t have minded a used one. I bought mine used …I think (with birthday money)  and so it only cost me $7 plus whatever shipping. (A big difference from the 30-50 dollar price for a new one and it was still like new anyway  (thankfully).

The book is full of full color glossy pages, with many pictures. Many of the characters are covered as well as places, set pieces, and other areas pertaining to the show up to the end of season 3 actually I think even some of the first half of season 4 is included.

I have been slowly reading it between books, or while I’m reading another book for a break. It seems to finish off with what was covered up to the end of the first half of season 4. (as aside from Bjorn, the Sons of Ragnar are not included so I hope there will be a 2nd book maybe when the series concludes.

Order via Amazon

The contents

Would be best for me to list some rather than just using the sort of blurry photo of it.

Part 1 Scandinavia,

Viking Scandinavia, Chapters 1-7 which consist of Home, Family,People, Gods, Legends the law and the Sea with their own topics under each.  The stories of each character, designing the village and Dressing Ragnar are other samples of things this book covers.

part 2  England- chapters 8-10 Christian England, Christians, Kings, Rivals and finally part 3- Frankia who has the last 2 chapters.  Creator and writer of Vikings Michael Hirst wrote the Forward and afterword

(if you would like me to detail the contents a little more drop me a line)

There’s also a section of sources if you’d like to read the sags, myths and legends yourself. After all the show is part history part fiction. So Hirst did take some creative liberties like making Ragnar and Rollo brothers. I watched a Youtube video that said the sons on the show are not really in the order of the historical figures being born (one in which Ivar is the first born of Aslug)

In the Forward and I do quote… Creator Michael Hirst Explains

“The First thing I need to say about my own work on the vikings is that it is a drama and not a documentary. The second, and equally important, thing to note is that drama is based on historical research and historical record. These two ideas are not, as some might think, contradictory.

Long before I start to write, I spend weeks, even months, rummaging about in account of Viking life, society, and culture, teasing out story lines and watching as various characters eging to emerge from the material and claim my attention. In this process I’m helped by our historical adviser, Justin Pollard, an expert on the Dark Ages. Justin carefully guides me though the labyrinth of Vikings myth, legend and historical account so that I know my narrative is as credible and as authentic as I can make it.

There are some seriously epic pictures in here as well (I took mine with my kindle as its easier to upload them)

They explain the Blood Eagle with a short interview with ‘Jarl Borg’ and the director of the season 2 episode 7 titled Blood Eagle  as well as the Director of Photography.  Designing the boats, there’s a section on the different tongues of the series and ‘swearing’ in old Norse. Which is more insults than what one would consider swearing. For instance some sound more like someone was playing with a Shakespearean insults kit…. just a lot less poetic, and sounds more childish.

“You have ugly sticking-out teeth, bug eyes and a wide mouth”

I hope they will make another book when the series ends (or after another 3-4 seasons) this way then I’ll have Ragnar’s sons stories as well. Which as much as I love Travis Fimmel and absolutely dreaded the death of Ragnar (which was originally going to be the end of season 1) The sons especially Ivar and Ubbe , have made the loss of Travis on the show much less.

This is a great look into the Tv series for any fan. As I re-read this to add any other comments I’m thinking they didn’t mention anything on Hedmund played by Kevin Durand, and am now looking through the book to see if my hunch is correct (I’ve looked through it a bunch of times before I even started to read it, so I don’t think I can even call it a hunch that it’s not in there.) Nope No Kevin Durand. Yes his character was a minor one, which had an impact on Sigurd as well as Aslug and the women of Kattegat

Oh I left off to read on Jarl Borg and the Blood Eagle. I don’t know about how other ‘coffee table’ books are but the way this one is written I don’t think you have to read more than a page or 2 plus you have the beautiful photography to break things up besides the character spotlight and behind the scenes explanations.

I’m wondering if I should do a video flip through of the book to add to this post; now that I have a laptop.

If this book doesn’t interest you as a fan of the show… Rollo says you are Berserk!

Francois Arnaud,         Manfred                                            Psychic/medium

After someone starts coming after him, he moves to Midnight  on his dead grandmas’s Xylda instructions  (played by Joanne Camp) who of course was also psychic and from a line of gypsies. The longer he stays in Midnight the more and more spirits he sees and helps the Midnighters help solve ‘cases’

Dylan Bruce            as              Bobo                                                   ?

All american  guy who owns the pawn shop and harboring some secret. he never talks about his past so what is he running from? Talk about skeletons in the closet… this guy all i know is he has weapons cache. I don’t know if he’s human or a supernatural and we do learn something of his past life having to do with his family.

Parisa Fitz-Henley          Fiji                                                    Witch

Owner of the new-age/wiccan  store is open hearted wide range of magical skills and manipulating objects as well as making potions. She owns a ginger tabby cat which you very much need to pay attention to at the end of the first epiosde. He’s sprinkled in others but I am very interested in why the cat talks. Was it a person that was  turned into a cat or her familiar? She and Bobo are besties but it seems she wants more.

Arielle Kebbel                   Olivia                                                     Human

IN relationship with the vampire she is the protector and when not protecting Midnight is an assassin with a closet to kill for! (really weapons cache/panic room and thensome!)

Jason Lewis                       Joe                                                           Fallen Angel

Towns tattoo artist  who arrived here 1000 years ago and hiding out with husband ‘chuy’ (bernardo Saracino) who so far seems human but turns out (especially later episode) he’s apparently not.

 Peter Mensah         Lemuel                                                     vampire

The vampire with the electric blue eyes. He feeds on blood but mostly is a Psi vampire which means he feeds on energy and emotions of humans.

Sarah Ramos,          Creek                                                         Human

I think she grew up in Midnight and wants to be a writer. Has what sounds like an abusive or maybe he’s just a drunk.Stays with the over protective father to protect her little brother and starts dating Manfred.

Yul Vazquez,          Rev. Emilio Sheehan                                    were tiger

in this small town he mostly just marries  and counsels folks and tends to the pet cemetery.  Olivia locks him away in the church cellar  around the full moon.

In all Honesty I think I started watching in part because I miss True Blood for one, and 2 it’s a summer show so it sort of substitutes for Supernatural on the CW, but in an opposite way. I like the characters that some are mysterious and you don’t know if a couple are or not human. Then there’s those we know are human (or are sure they are) but are still very mysterious.

Not sure how it’s done ratings wise, I don’t pay any attention to them because there’s so many different outlets to watch ‘TV’ I’m not sure if they are able to even keep track of ratings between actual live television viewing, DVR and then watching on a streaming site (and if they count on demand and free on demand views as well)

Also to me the rating has  nothing to do with how good the show actually is.(For instance on Rotten tomatoes you can rate something as ‘certified fresh’ months or years before the title is even out. usually the story etc is NOT fresh so they need to ‘re-brand’ that option however that work be it the users of the site that make it so or the critics who really know nothing! )
