Kingsman: Golden Circle

2017    R     Action, adventure, comedy  2 hours 21 minutes

Julianne Moore, Taron Edgerton, Hally Berry, Channing Tatum, Mark Strong, Jeff Bridges, Colin Firth  Pedro Pascal  more here

Agents Eggsy (now Galahad)and Merlin team with their American counterparts, the Statesmen after their headquarters gets blown to smithereens.

The opening action scene is cool but sadly they have Matrix-like slow-mo stop and go fx which I hate. first off it not only ruins the momentum of the action sequence, but it also looks ‘cartoon-y’.  They used it too much (I think every action scene had the ‘trick’ in it to some extent.) Use that for one part of an action sequence fine… like a certain move that would otherwise not be noticed and needs to be shown just a little slower so we can appreciate it. This was used in a few points in one fight/action scene.

Oh I like the Statesman building. That;’s cool, and always wished they’d make buildings like that for real. (easier to find where you are going especially if you can’t find the building number.

The guy from  Game of Thrones forget character’s name but he’s a dead one.  I think his real name is Pablo Pascal gets his cowboy on with a LAZso (Lazer Lasso) and after a bit of an entertaining Whip fight ‘I feel like a tornado in a trailer park”

And there’s quite a musical cameo with flair …See the source image

Oh Action scene n poppy island and the Scissor sign!

I need to rewatch the first but while still somewhat enjoyable I don’t think it was as awesome as the first.

Though it was still better than Atomic Blonde, even with a cartoony looking effect.

Black Panther

2 hours 14 minutes

Genre:    Action, adventure,sci-fi

Directed by Ryan Coogler

stars Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira,Florence Kasumba, Winston Duke, Martin Freeman, Forest Whitakaer, Andy Sirkus, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright

I was reading Entertainment Weekly’s interview with the ladies of Black Panther (#1502  Feb 16 2018) and I think it was the Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira that said

Amai – African word of respect (or its respect for elder women) I think all women are considered mothers even if they are not. (or something like that)

Chadwick Boseman – T’Challa   is King and the nation’s protector asBlack Panther

Danai Gurira -Okoye  the General in charge of Wakanda’s defense and head of the all-female ‘Dora Milaje‘ secret service

Lupita Nyong’o- Nakita who steals the king’s heart and Wakandan spy

Letitia Wright –  Shuri , T’challa’s little sis  and a sort of female Tony Stark as she’s the Vibranium Gadget maker

Angela Bassett – Ramonda the Queen mother

Forest Whitaker – Shaman Zuri      Forest Whitaker’s ‘Black Panther’ Role Has a Big Twist

Michael B. Jordan- Killmonger

Andy Serkis- Ulysses Klaue

Winston Duke-M’Baku leader of the Gorilla tribe

I saw this at Alamo Draft house which had a Black Panther themed specialty menu I forget the names of the items but they were made with African spices. I got the popcorn which was called

‘Niter Nibah’ I forget what the spices were on it (and sadly I cannot find the specialty menu on the Theater website) So I’m not big on hot spices but I do like a little bite on occasion. I had one piece of popcorn and it must have had a mass of the spices on it and I couldn’t eat another piece til my soda came. The last few movies I’ve gone to I guess were on Tuesdays which is discount day and I think before 2pm as they have it at that time where you can talk etc but they don’t put up the pre-show clip show which I really like. It’s one of the reasons I go there for my movies.

Before the movie they had a PSA of sorts with Chadwick boseman who just gives us the staredown, so we don’t use our phones. “I’m watching”

Black Panther takes place shortly after the events of Civil War. Wakanda, the beautiful and technologically advanced (fictional) African nation which has remained isolated from the world will soon be ruled by T’Challa as King.  It looks like a paradise, then you pass through the invisible border and you have an industrial city bigger than New York, Toronto, and any in the state of California put together!

The political story of whether or not to share their knowledge and help struggling countries as well as communities of their African American cousins where Eric Killmonger grew up. In a sense, they are enslaving themselves by not helping the world or sharing (though I understand they wouldn’t want the vibranium getting in the wrong hands).

I’ve heard praise for Eric Killmonger’s antagonist that he is the most layered of MCU villains (besides isn’t he the first human villain?). This is a fight not just fueled by or for power, but for the relationship between Africa and their African-American cousins as well, and rightfully so considering a bit of a twist (that wasn’t part of his origins in the comics)

I saw in the trailer there was a some Lion King looking scene and other’s have sounded not happy with that. Its a spirit world (see the ‘easter egg’ videos below for the name) that when you take the heart herb it not only heals you, gives you strength and speed of the Black Panther but you also are able to speak to your ancestors.

Oh that holographic car chase? How does it happen that it seems to become solid? I’ll let you think about it until you see the movie if you haven’t already.

The movie also throws out political opinions on current events as one of T’Challa’s guards (I think Danai) says

Guns, So Primitive

(frankly, I agree also, if you are not the military, police force or something of the like and I see you as a coward. I don’t need a gu In as when need be I  can be QUITE resourceful)

I have to give a thumbs up to the Costume Designer Ruth E. Carter designed the Futuristic but ‘ancient’ traditional (fictitious) African nation from researching not only African tribal fashions from around the continent but patterns, colors, and silhouettes.   Check out some of the awesome costumes here  I’d like to see something about those weapons esp. those ‘frisbee’ disks.

I would love a necklace that has an outfit in it for emergencies.

Andy Serkis is hysterical in the interrogation room, well for us he is, for him he’s I have no words but if the character is on something, Id like some of that happy juice!

And T’Challa has a cool new catsuit… which looks SO much better than the last batsuit!

A bit of fun at the end and how sad after 10n years of Marvel movies people don’t have a clue to wait til the VERY end of the credits that there’s another scene! SO many people left.

The first easter egg scene I think would have been included in the movie itself, before the end with T’Challa and his sister, the one to really wait for WAS the second one which I was thinking might have something to do with the end of Civil War and a nod to infinity war. And the person was referenced in the movie “Another white boy for me to fix” as said by  Shuri.

Speaking of which I do love the sibling ribbing between she an T’Challa but then again I don’t have siblings myself, tho it’s not a jerky sort of thing it’s done with love and I guess to keep the king grounded.

Oh and I saw the Craaaaziest shield wall in this!

Boseman comes back on after the 2nd(all the way at the end of the credits)  Easter Egg scene  “I’m still watching!”

5 Best and 5 Worst Things about Black Panther from Looper

I found the whole movie to be quite good, though may be missing something. Unlike previous Marvel Movies Killmonger does not seem to get as much face time, though maybe for me, many of his scenes are not really memorable. I remember 2 or 3 only which are pivotal points in the movie.  Also is he the first human antagonist in a Marvel movie (at least from phase 2 on?) The first easter egg scene I agree, was not needed but I wasn’t there for that one I was there for the one I had a feeling would be shown and thankfully staying through ALL of the credits paid off~ I’ll just hint that it was someone put once at the end of Civil War

And some other fodder

Baby Driver

2017        R       1 hour 53 minutes     blu-ray     watch after credits for a behind the scenes

I loved the opening two scenes. Maybe you might consider it just one but we first see baby ‘dancing’ around in the car singing along to his music, which switches to a great car chase. I had fun watching that one, and a bit of a laugh at the cops who throw out the spikes and what came next is what I laughed at them for.

Atomic Blonde

See the source image2017     R   1:55   action/thriller but really Drama      blu-ray   James McAvoy,  Charlize Theron, John Goodman, Bill Skarsgard

Adapted from the Antony Johnston and Sam Hart graphic novel The Coldest City movie Atomic Blonde stars Charlize Theron and James McAvoy.  Theron’s character is a cold war spy by the name of Lorraine Broughton who must recover a list of double agents amid a sea of questionable allies one in which is James McAvoy’s British agent David Percival. Percival, as you might be able to tell from the trailers, has gone a bit feral with lots of secrets and possibly STDs while embedded in East Berlin.

A MI*6 agent is murdered in 1989 Berlin Germany and fellow spy is sent to investigate and retrieve a list of double agents the dead agent was carrying.

I would swear the fight scenes were a faster pace in the trailers but during the movie, they’re kind of a bore, like the rest of it is. The fight scenes feel like they are over too quick compared to many other films. I know, I know… always leave them wanting more, but not when the fights look as though they are in slow motion and swear you could do them yourself if you had the time to re-watch them to memorize the choreography. To give you an idea for most 1 on 1 fight scenes in movies, let’s say they last 5 minutes-15 minutes. These I’m sure are 1-3 minutes long if even. In other words, for an ‘action movie,’ there’s not much action. It should more have been marketed as a spy drama, as there is NOTHING thrilling about it. If I watched it at night, I would have fallen asleep.

When I checked at some point to see how much longer the movie would be on, thinking it would be 15 minutes left, there was still over an hour of the movie left. I am VERY disappointed in this movie, and so glad I didn’t pay to see it in the theater as for me it looked promising enough to see in the theater. I think a baseball or golf game would have been more entertaining to watch. Also who the actual double agent is… I wasn’t surprised.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2

2017  PG13 2:15  Blu-ray   Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana, Kurt Russell,Zoe Saldana, Batista

I went to see King Arthur aka Charlie Hunnam in the theater instead of this. I’m glad I paid to watch Hunnam and not this. (not to mention I also rented and watched King Arthur Legend of the Sword again before getting this) I still like the other movie better, shame it had to be against a Marvel movie.

Baby Groot breaks it down with an amusing dance number around some creature with a very toothy grin, tentacles, and wait was that…confetti breath?!?!

Star-lord…meet ‘egg’ lord and did I just see HOWARD THE DUCK?!

The ship that comes out of the egg looking ship, looks like some dental mold, that takes the impression of your teeth. man is Ego’s planet pretty but it is no Pandora. Oh and Rooker’s character and that Arrow… Too bad Stephen Amell’s Arrow doesn’t get his own Rooker fin-hawk.

Rocket and the rest of their faces when they jump through space.

I think Quill just outdid Roman Reigns’ Superman punch (you’ll get it when you see it… Pac punch?)

Rocky ‘not raccoon’ cameo

and I’m not one who likes Independence Day because of the fireworks (I don’ mind watching them, don’t want to be around them, most of the time they just don’t impress me and most of all I can’t take the noise.) But these are some Hela pretty ‘fireworks’

Watch ALL the credits there are many Groots! How many are there in all (I lost count)

Yondu’s new ‘hair’ gives him a Unicorn profile

rental special features has a Gag reel on it.

This wasn’t as good as the first one (chalk it up to a sophomore slump, or just a bad story?)

There’s only 3 parts of this movie I remember maybe 4 and I think I have already mentioned them all, oh and then there’s the part toward the end but don’t want to risk ruining it.

but if you already have a Marvel Library going you can order your format here

Spider-man Homecoming

2017    PG-13  actions Sci-fi

Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr. Marisa Tomei  Jon Favreau

I wanted to see this in the Alamo Draft house when it was out but sadly for some reason never got to see it.  It was good, but average by Marvel standards.

I saw it after I saw Thor: Ragnarok and when I mentioned the amount that Hulk was in Ragnarok someone said Ironman and Captain America was in Spidey too much (also ruining Chris Evan’s cameos for me and so I also have to be an  Inconsiderate idiot telling you about it. But I felt bad for Chris  and the Lame  cameo they gave him)

The amount Robert Downey jr. was in it was more than a cameo, but it wasn’t enough to include what should have given the movie a 2nd star or even another title, Thor; Ragnarok should have!

Thor: Ragnarok had so much of Hulk in it, it didn’t seem to be a Thor movie. That was funny, better than Spidey but I was a bit annoyed as Ragnarok could have easily been called Planet Hulk instead, and maybe should have been, as he gets as much time as Hemsworth plus I hear there IS supposed to be a Hulk movie coming but I don’t have a 100% on it happening yet. Captain America we see a few times but still stays as a cameo length so neither he nor Robert Downey Jr. show up Tom Holland or take the spotlight away from Spider-man (err spider kid)

Anyway sorry for the rant. This as better with the amount of face-time the 2 Avengers get in the show. ‘Ironman’ is in it as a mentor figure, so he was sort of a 2nd co-star to Michael Keaton’s Vulture. Stan Lee’s cameo although shorter than Chris Evans’ was much cooler.

It is definitely worth a watch especially after those fiascos with Garfield in the role.

I like when he’s learning to use the Stark issued Spidey suit and is stuck in a warehouse (he asks how long he’s been there or what time it is) in which wasn’t long. Also What is with the spidey signal? WHY would spider-man have a signal for himself? I don’t even remember him using it.Does it stamp the criminals to show who caught them? I mean why would you need it when you can just wrap them in a web cocoon?

The end scene (don’t worry I won’t say what) I had a laugh/scream reaction to. and this is the VERY end scene of the movie. All I will say is to look out the door. (and who and what they say)

Michael Keaton as the Vulture, all I could think of was.. Is he getting typecast from the Birdman movie, also seeing him in that other movie costume. Although that Vulture get up, is cool! I would love one to get around town go shopping etc!  I still prefer Keaton as Beetlejuice and am still so wishing for another BJ movie. Being as I can’t think of anyone else I would have liked to see in the role more, I guess that means he did an Impressive job and I don’t impress easily.

Easter egg was stupid but I did like the dude’s scorpion tattoo.
