Great Wall

2017  PG-13 action adventure fantasy  Matt Damon, Tian Jing, Willem  Dafoe, Pedro Pascal

For a movie called the great wall, I found a lack of posters without it in it. It’s mostly just the actors with the text(maybe a small fore-image or background image of the wall.  If there are any (They are from China and those countries, a few I’ve seen but they are more art than an image from the movie.)

So I was sea-sawing on the decision to see this. I got an email from Showcase cinemas that if you had a star pass and bought a ticket for the movie, you get a FREE!!! Popcorn AND! drink!!! made the decision for me! My dad wanted to see it as well so we went and had ‘daddy daughter’ time.  For a sort of last minute decision, we quite enjoyed it.

The movie is about one of the legends of the Great Wall, as well as the army that protects it. a couple of mercenaries in search of black powder (gun powder)  end up attacked by some creature and are able to kill it. They end up helping the colorful army defend the wall against some monstrous creatures.

The army is a color coded menagerie of  warriors. Red archers,  Yellow foot soldiers and my favorite the Blue Crane corps, amde up of all women who ‘fly’. They are like a fighting Cirque du Soleil.

They have been in preparation for the return of some creatures, I forget… were they called tregarts? (or was that something from harry potter?)

Finding Dory

2016  PG  1:37 adventure, Animated    Blu-ray  Ellen DeGeneres,Albert Brooks, Ed O’Neil,  Ty Burrell, Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy, Sigourney Weaver  IMDB info

Oh my Dory must be short for adorable cause look at her as a baby!

He parents notice early on she has a short term memory as well as being easily distracted but they taught her well.  In this adventure we travel the sea to find her parents who she thinks is in a sea world type aquatic rescue place.

With the help of friends along the way and yes we get to hang out with Nemo and his Dad Marlin again. She finds out where she originally came from and that her parents aren’t her only family.

I think you could say even when you can’t see him the octopus is a bit of a scene stealer! (which watch the beginning of the credits as it works as a find the octopus.

The last half and even better last quarter of the movie is best part of the whole.

The octopus driving was a hoot

The Legend of Tarzan

2016, PG-13, action adventure Drama

Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie,Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson

We start in the congo  with some deal for some raw diamonds, and then switch to London. Between scenes  we get flashbacks of Tarzan growing up and his life with the gorillas.

Was cracking up at the guy stuck in the train roof!  and half an hour to 1 1/2 hours into the movie we finally find out why the guy in the cheeta  skin wants Tarzan. What the hell with that cut away, then all of a sudden we are in some port.

Now THAT is what you call an army!!

Was ok but too much green screen CG use. Why not just use a real animal  (trained animal actors) and try to use that motion capture.

With Samuel L Jackson in this and going to be in Kong Skull Island I was getting confused with what I was watching every now and again!

Watching this made me realize how much I miss watching Alex on True Blood… MORE MOVIES PLEASE!!

I could probably watch this a few times again before I get tired of it.

Star Trek Beyond

2016   PG-13  Blu-ray      actions, adventure, sci-fi   stars  Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl urban Simon Peg  et al

The opening scene is funny I’m guessing its supposed to be sort of like those fluffy tribbles (is that what they were called?)

These are some sort of Triceretops looking things (or at least what they make me think of)  They look so big while Captain Kirk is talking to them, then one stands in front of him and well… the scene escalates!

Wait did I just see a walking string bean? Oh they actually have some green aliens in this one!

The villain Krall reminds me of the Dark Elf from Thor:Dark World and sounds really familiar. I probably knew while filming was going on who it was, but I do like when I forget especially when they are in make-up and prosthetic it’s fun to guess. First I thought the really tall guy from Lost, then I was like, no can’t be as this guy isn’t the right height.

RIP Anton Yelchin     he looks different in this one some how.. like he was more muscular or something. (he didn’t look as scrawny as he did)

After an attack by Krall’s ‘killer bees’ (which remind me more of the way a certain type of a group of birds fly) we have the fall of the Enterprise who’s crew lands on various parts of what I’m calling ‘pumpkin Planet’ (too bad we couldn’t see more than one planet in a movie) though depending on the part the characters land, looks like a different planet each.

There’s a part or 2 where you can tell it’s a green screen with the characters pasted over it  one in which  captain Kirk & the Black and White alien (their backs to us) driving away.

This is definitely NOT the best of the 3! Though I can’t decide if I liked the first one or the one with Benedict Cumberbatch in it better. (however I  remember more of the sequel)

And again we get some of the ‘classics’ that Bones is so crazy about!  They ride the wave of the bee hive in a loud and distracting manor to sabotage it

The movie goes a little meta with a solo scene of Spock with some package out looking an a picture from one of the original casts. (I guess this was supposed to be a tribute to Leonard Nemoy’s passing.

Oh Simon Peg got a writing credit for this, could that be the reason it wasn’t that great?   I give it a big fat

L is for Lawless by Sue Grafton

L is for Lawless (Kinsey Millhone, #12)

Crime/ Mystery  adventure

Cast of Characters    Kinsey Millhone   Ray Rawson  Gilbert   Laura Rawson  Helen Rawson

Kinsey is a twice divorced no kids Licensed P.I. (private Investigator) who while on vacation (for a friend’s wedding) is hired pro bono to get down to the bottom of why Bucky can’t seem to get the benefits his grandfather is owed from being in the air-force. So far the military etc cannot ‘identify’ him. (as in find his military records, as the family does not know his serial numbers etc…) He had no money but an old friend Lawson shows up. He wants to rent the place out, though it is not yet available. He’s pretty mysterious and is not telling Kinsey everything he knows.

Chester and Bucky are dipsticks, good for nothing but checking the oil IF that.  When Kinsey stakes out their place and sees someone leave with a duffle bag, she goes in pursuit to get to the bottom of things.  First, she has to be atop everything., the duffle is going on a plane though for some reason I thought this might be a red herring. As after the person leaves the scene of the crime, they pick someone up and leave with what looks like the same duffle. So what is the deal?

Not only is it a mystery thriller, but is a bit of an adventure as well as it takes Kinsey to Texas and Louisville. Plus somewhat of a scavanger hunt or I should say treasure hunt
. I pretty much saw the end coming and speaking of which I could have just rad 3-5 of the beginning chapters and just the last 2 of the 226 page novel as there’s 25-50 pages of story that was really not needed.

The main deal is getting through the first half of the book, it took me a few days over a month to read as it started out slow and was built up too much and too long. The last 1-2 chapters is where the story actually ends. everything to me between the chapters mentioned is really filler (aside from a couple of clues)

This was the thinnest book (I have on hand)  in the series so I thought it would be a nice test run to see if I liked the writing. it’s ok, but definitely the rest of the books are better to read when I am not trying to read a lot of books so I can make a dent in my pile!

Labyrinth

2012,  Not Rated,  2 part total  2:56   John Hurt, Tom Felton, (never realized ‘That’ was him!)  Sebastian Stan Other cast

Based on the Kate Mosse novels lives are linked by a destiny to solve the world’s most legendary mystery.

This starts with an archeology dig in france I think it was (or was it italy) and one of the diggers finds a bracelet or something when a tremor rocks the area, though it does not seem anyone else notices. She finds a cave opening in the boulders that was not there before and goes in where she starts to get flashbacks of the 1200s.

While the father entrusts his book to his good daughter, Katie McGrath’s Oriane Congost is trying to steal the books for herself for whatever reason.

The Wisdom of the (holy) grail is contained in 3 books and the Labyrinth is a symbol of it.

The Book of Numbers, Words, and Potions.

I didn’t have trouble getting through the first part, which wasn’t all too thrilling but the 2nd part you would think would be more interesting, dramatic and a little suspenseful. It wasn’t.

Hardcore Henry

2016    R   Blu-ray  1:35  Action Adventure Sci-fi  Sharlto Copley

Henry is a newly revived cyborg ‘alive’ for just 5 minutes when his wife is abducted by some power mad asinine jackhole! He’s running low an that’s on both battery power and knowledge of Moscow.

The movie gives you a first person point of view of the action as though you are in a simulator!

When I first saw the previews I thought why not make more movies like this? In moderation of course! Maybe 1 a year or every 2.  I liked the angel how they did it, great with an action movie but how would it work if it were a horror movie? I think if you have the right story it would work well with! Heck why not do 1 more fast and furious this way?!?! give US our own car (doesn’t have to be the whole movie just give us a chance what it looks and ‘feels’ like to see what the drivers see driving that fast and maybe during a stunt.)

Oh and there’s a time you’d swear you were playing a first person shooter game as you see the guns out in front of you like some of those games show.

WTF is this dude with the magic?? Is he another robot?

Wish I got a chance to see it in the theater as I wanted.
