Unfriended

2015  R 1:22  on Blu-ray

Laura barnes kills herself after a Cyber bully attack. The 6  classmates whose cyber abuse drove her to her end, look back on the tragic event during a video chat, in which they soon realize someone else with a fatal agenda is listening in.

So I’ll give points for the different format, of using the internet instead of some found footage docu, though this turns out to be a bore.  THe movie is flat, lame and not even scary. Good gods, who moves their mouse around that much, if you get motion sickness, don’t watch this, you’ll get it from watching that cursor move around the screen so much.

You don’t see much, all the characters do most of the time is argue, freak out and so on. You have to not only listen & watch but read IMs as well. The movie could have been much better  if it wasn’t all done on the computer screen.    D

Divergent: Insurgent

2015  PG-13  1:59  Blu-ray

The 2nd installment of the book to film  adaptation  based on Veronica Roth’s sci-fi novels.

on the verge of war Beatrice  ‘tris’  Prior looks for the rest of her fellow Divergents, and other allies. She and the leader of their clan must move fast as the Erudite leader is in hot pursuit, in need of one of them to open some box with a message from the leaders that was found in Bea’s home.

The first movie was better, and watching this edition makes me thankful I didn’t read the books. If  this reads the way the movie plays… it’s a slow chore of a read.  1 hour of the movie felt like 2! Yes a lot is in that one hour, but there’s not much action, as I thought there would be (like the first) . I don’t remember what the reviews were when this came out, but I’m guessing they were not good.

Hot Pursuit

2015  PG-13  1:27  ImDB

Straight laced Texas police Officer Cooper, played by Reese Witherspoon is assigned to protect Daniella Riva (Sofia Vergara) the wife of a drug kingpin who works for Cortez.  Crooked cops and hitmen  start closing in, so Coop and her charge need to flee after being framed for what went down at the Riva compound.

Rob Kazinsky’s Randy shows up when they have to ‘commandeer’ a pickup truck to get to Dallas. kazinsky does a pretty good job with the southwestern accent (or as far as the few I’ve heard have been)

Reese totally steals the show with her Neurotic chihuahua barking at things only it can see performance. Intense definitely a way of defining it. Vergara dissing  Cooper gets pretty funny at times and their argument in spanish on the bus for me is classic.

As for the hotel scenes: I think I may have even blushed a bit when she walked in on Randy about to take or just finishing a shower or it could have just been those dimples and smile. (I swear he’s a loveable dorky bear!)

This was a fun watch, and sadly no special features on the rental disk  which for me was quite disappointing. There however was a blooper reel during the credits which was a bit fun. I thought this was going to be as disappointing as past chick flick buddy movies, but I really enjoyed this and laughed alot.

B for the movie                       F for not one bit of special features

Jupiter Ascending

2015 PG-13  2 hours   Mila Kunis Channing Tatum  Sean Bean

A Young Jupiter struggles to make ends meet and hates her life. She does a cleaning service with her mother (and I think grandmother or an aunt). She has a conniving cousin and none of her family seems to understand her. An other planetary being that’s a bounty Hunter tracks her down and she learns she is destined to change the fate of the Universe.

Well there’s apparently beings that own planets and there’s a blue haired ‘wonder woman’ with one cool ass ride.

There’s winged ‘Godzillas’ (only way I can describe them) and some bee cottage (WTF that looks nasty)

This may have you asking yourself… Hoverboard or those Boots Tatum’s character wears.

Some of the aircraft in it reminded me of that from John Carter and even the Mountain Banshees of Avatar

There’s plenty of action but then it loses momentum when they get to their version of the DMV , well I think it was supposed to be like Social Security offices getting her id etc. Whatever may not have been CG was cool, and even the CGI stuff was cool.

I LOVED the costumes of the other planets, and the gown she wears for the ‘wedding’ now I could see that being at a real wedding.  I think I will have to add this costume designer to my avatar awards.    C+

Fear the Walking Dead

Fear the Walking dead is a spin-off of the Walking Dead (How could you not know that when it’s in the title?)

Full Cast on IMDB.com     * Official Site

The 1st season, 6 episode ‘Companion series as AMC puts it ot the Walking Dead  is created by Dave Erickson and The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman. Don’t call it a sequel  I’ve read but you can say that all you want because ‘Fear’ is a prequel. I mean how many years down the road are we into in the Walk Dead’s timeline, and what year was it supposed to have started?

With ‘Fear’ we get out of the backwoods of Georgia and explore a major city on the verge of disintegrating.  Remember this takes  place in the beginning while Rick is in his coma (which was for 5 weeks)  when the outbreak first starts. Sorry to those who would like to see a crossover it’s already been said that won’t happen, at least not right now with Geography and timeline constraints (Let’s hope in a few years maybe our Atlanta crew will try to make their way west, to L.A. where ‘Fear’ takes place.)  The only question however is, are those characters in L.A. still alive in the current TWD timeline). L.A. was used as it works with the parent show’s  theme of shifting identity and reinvention. Los angeles specifically is a place where you go to reinvent and cast aside your old self to become someone new” -says Erickson in an issue of TV guide. And don’t expect to see any landmarks  (darn. That sucks cause I think a scene with a celebrity having their hands immortalized  in the cement would somehow be a cool shot like the point when they turn) Well I’ll just have to tweet that to the creators who knows, maybe they’ll change their minds at least for next season if things go well. Erickson says the ocean is important. ‘There’s something interesting about having your back literally at the edge of the continent during the apocalypse.

We have a cast of characters that as far as the first few episodes, I’m not sure if I like any of them; let alone grow to like.

Widowed guidance Counselor Madison played by Kim Dickens has a pair of teens Nick and Alicia.  Her finace Travis is the English teacher at the school and seems cool with Mad’s drug addled son Nick who Frank Dillane plays with big wide eyes that I thought for a bit that he was ‘junior’ from Under the Dome. Nick sees the first ‘scary’ gory moment of the series which he mistakes for an hallucination. No decomposing rotting flesh corpses here, these zombies aside from what came off to me as ‘glowing’ eyes could just be mistaken for any cannibal. Greg Nicotero again is who built the visual aesthetic  for the freshly turned, which he says is ‘Trauma based, instead of decomposition based. THere should not be a tremendous amount of difference between what a junkie looks like and what one of the infected look like.” for the first few episodes anyway. Executive producer Dave Erickson notes the importance of a ‘soulfulness’ in the zombies’ appearance that would cause the living to question the morality of killing the creatures. It becomes a mind F— if you want top do away with someone. We couldn’t have them be faster, hipper and more ‘citified’ but they’re definitely leaning as much toward human as possible”

Travis has his own strained relationship with his ex-wife and son Chris played by Lorenzo James Henrie.  It’s a menagerie of ill-equipped, dysfunctional family matters, with a slow burn in the first few episodes.(Is that the reason this doesn’t feel as fun as TWD?

Through out parts of the show we get some news by news reports and I word of mouth, by which I think first comes from one of the students; ‘Reports from 5 states of a virus or microbe’ . Watching the preparations to leave town by the characters, including one having a coughing fit as he packs up the car. This feels slow as we already know the state of the future ahead and what it holds.  Seeing the shock on peoples faces when they see bullets don’t work feels a bit odd, as I am not sure if it was supposed to be dumbfounded horror or surprised shock. And Instead of ‘walkers’ they are called ‘Infected’

Travis comes off as captain obvious when he goes to check out the drug den where Nick saw his  first zombie. When Travis slips on  and puts his hand right in the gore (ok all together now…EWwwwwwww) all he comes out with is “Something bad happened here” The writers couldn’t have given him something with more personality, or at least a bit of wit (it is a coping mechanism for some) or more educated sounding than this?  Let’s hope the younger cast members will have more personality than him, however I’ve seen 2 episodes so far as (initially) writing this and I don’t see one.  I can’t relate to any of the characters not even if I place myself back to being a teen.

Thanks to Travis lit class we get what I think is a neat outline of what Jack-London’s to build a fire  is trying to teach us “How not to die” Frankly, isn’t that what The Walking Dead has already taught us, how to survive in a zombie apocalypse?

I don’t think I have yet seen the  cultural anxiety metaphor yet of the show (Like how vampires are used as a metaphor for addiction), though the second part and possibly some of the next episode will have the police brutality (against one of the turned). THe backdrop of L.A. does not provide any industry driven on feeding the masses like in other survival shows it so far has offered nothing but cliches. Is Nick worth saving as other shows of this magnitude ask Are others worth saving if they can’t or won’t save themselves? (well at one point Nick does  as well as mother & Travis!)

So far there is a lack of character development  although we do see Nick at the start of withdrawal. Also the exact cause or pursuit of a cure for the outbreak will not be touched , though we do get the fun of seeing these characters learn Zombie defense and if the ‘humanity’ of the zombies can be preserved.

Alicia psychoanalyzing her son’s addictive behavior can also be referred too about Fear as well “You repeat the same behavior and expect different results”

In the 3rd episode “The Dog”  Love Madison’s conversation with son about the drugs.

son:    Do we have more

Madison:   enough to get you east

son:   and then what

Madison:  You howl at the moon

My question is why is the religious one the one that doesn’t hesitate with the whole morals, ethics  and humanity thing?

“It’s the good ones that go first”

A few Facts

-Fear is already renewed for a 15 episode 2nd season.

-New viewers will not need knowledge of the Original series ‘if you are one of the 7 people who have not seen the Walking Dead, you can come into this show Fresh” says Erickson

-The creators ‘Hope people come into fear expecting it to be its own thing as opposed to comparing it to The Walking Dead.”

Honestly How would we? Different Coast, we have no where near the same archetypes as the characters in Walking dead, nor the knowledge the characters do. I’m sure there’s others that i can’t compare. The only way to do so is ‘it’s a ‘zombie’ show but not yet really zombies.

I have thought of one way however…

In the Walking Dead the guy at the CDC tells Rick that they all carry the virus and when we die we will turn. So why is it that in  ‘Fear’ people are just getting ‘sick, and turn; but they never even died?

With the finale coming this sunday (October 4), the episode better be a doozy. So far this season the people were very slow to notice  their neighbors, co-workers, maybe family even were really ‘sick’  (but how did they get sick in the first place, when others did not?) and just seemed to turn. Rioting, sneaking, and the government taking the injured and sick including those that may not be able to handle the situation mentally or those that are addicts.  Travis doesn’t seem to do a thing, and the kids though yes they are teens are just gallivanting around town; and what is this crap with not being allowed to use the cars in the safe areas?  We really need our Atlanta group to make their way to Cali and beef up the show. I hope the finale will vindicate this is a show worth watching, otherwise… I’m not so sure though I thought instead of just focusing on california (& the west coast ?) for Fear… do you think show creators should expand so we can see various parts of the states and the rest of the world.

(I will likely update this once the finale airs and I gather my thoughts.

The finale was not exciting at all, it should have been some big climax, but was just predictable. It was as empty as the rest of the season, not even a faster pace, darker mood or anything. I think the actors may be phoning in their performances, because I don’t feel any emotion from them. By now I should have at least one character I like, and one I want dead, Nick to me in an odd way is the only one I sort of like and I am not even sure why. But would I be all Noo!!! If he was killed off? No, none of them I just want the show itself to be a little more on the lines of the quality of The Walking Dead. That arena filled with zombies? I think it was opened, and the horde look like the crowd at a metal festival.

I want to know who Nick’s cellmate is. Is he good, can we trust him cause so far he on my No radar.  Is he just a wealthy businessman or  some sort of shady dealer? But then what dealer (other than casino)  have you seen or heard of that wears a suit or cufflinks? He’s smooth looking so maybe in some sort of mob?

I think they need a new spin for next season, if it comes back which I think it will only because I heard it was renewed before the show even aired!  I hope next  season will be the same length of only 9-10 episodes, as I think that was the only reason I was able to stand watching it (besides the fact I don’t think much else was on at the time)

(Possible Spoilers) fear the walking dead finale will be the deadliest episode of the season  didn’t look so much to me.

Mia’s Tempest

Horror

About the book

Mia’s tempest is a long look at what could go wrong if our world could fight back. How that fight might affect individual lives, and how just one person’s unwillingness to take responsibility for their actions could damn us all. In the span of a single year, we walk in the shoes of those people, to try and understand what it is to be human in a world full of horror, magic, and fear of what the next season might bring.

Something is happening in the nature world, it’s the season nature fights back the pollen is extremely high. It’s so severe that people that don’t even have allergies are fatally breaking out or not able to breathe. Instead of them happening instantaneously, it seems to happen one after the other.  Ugh oh,  now my eye itches (and I kid you not on my part)…is what you ‘hear’ from one character.  It’s an allergy ‘plague’!

What is interesting about the book is that the main character is not a person, but but ‘mother nature’. The  storm  of weather plagues is the main character, reaping havoc and chaos across the globe with various severe or maybe extreme (would explain it better) weather disasters.

The narrative story has a good flow which makes it a fast read. There’s not many characters in the stories but for those that are don’t have the time to have their stories developed more.  As I am one with seasonal allergies (thank goodness the foods I’m supposedly allergic to I can eat or I would have died of starvation long ago’!)  the first chapter can get you a bit paranoid.

I actually got an itchy nose and eye and looked at the window like oh gods its here!  I hate hot weather but do love my thunder god (and lightning). I get more or less hyper when a thunder storm is on its way. I go outside or I watch ou the window. I can say if this book were to be a movie (or tv mini series)  ‘Thunder’ would have has some of the best scenes, or at least one of the best parts  (as long as they didn’t screw it up with some lame cheap FX)  They were anyway in my mind (and the reason I prefer to read, not listen to books)

I asked LA Nantz about adding another word  to the title of the thunder chapter, making it Thunder Shock. As I thought it would beef  up and make the chapter sound  as scary as the chapter was, even for someone that loves thunder and lightning.

LA Nantz :  Thunder was the word given for the story idea. I take single words and turn them into horror. So all of the single name titles were part of that writing exercise.

I was a little disappointed there wasn’t earthquakes (other than the volcano) or worse ones as when I was little  here in New York, we had one in the 80s that was 3-5 pointer that shook the bed as well as left some new cracks in the pavement outside. I woke up thinking Mr. T was shaking the bed  (meanwhile the neighborhood got up to inspect what happened) In New York we do not get many earthquakes (and I would like to leave it that way) even though we have one of the largest Teutonic plates and if I remember correctly, it doesn’t only span part of Ny but I think another state or 2 as well. I’m sure if I felt another if I didn’t freak out (which it hard to get me to) I definitely wouldn’t be all too happy.

I enjoyed the story after getting used to the format as I have not (or at least don’t remember) reading one of this sort.  There is some great  imagery. There were a couple areas where I got ‘turned around’ but I think that may have been a bit of confusion,

(misunderstanding the way it was worded?) Not sure if it’s on my part or not  not sure.           C

Book Excerpt

And as suddenly as the flash that had knocked them down, it had happened. Out of the four witches sprang a horse, and upon its back sat a woman of such power, and dressed in battle gear so bright, the witches found it hard to look at them. The young witches struggled to flee but could not: they were held by what they could not see. From the backs of the horses were lowered an old woman, a woman of middle age, and a young woman who looked to be in her teens. Again, only three stood there, but they did not move or say a word, rather they looked towards Mia, as a darkness grew up from behind her. The one spirit there stepped away, almost in fear of it, and out of that darkness stepped a woman none could see clearly. Her age was unknowable, her power made the very earth tremble with each step. And finally she stood over Mia, smiling down at her, and spoke to all there. “These three are the Norns, my daughters, Urd, Verthandi, and Skuld, I am Wryd!”

Green Street Hooligans

gsh2005  R  1:48  Charlie Hunnam Elija Wood Claire Forlani  Marc Warren    (more cast

After a footie match the rowdy ‘firms’ of each team get to trash talking while waiting for their trains across the tracks from each other. Of course it ends up in a brawl. Matt Buckner (Wood) with a major in journalism is kicked out of Harvard a few months early of getting his degree. His rich coke head roommate got Matt dragged into the scandal (guilt by association basically)   Matt goes to stay with his sister and her family in London. After Matt arrives,  Pete the husband’s  brother stops in on his way to a match. His brother asks him to take Matt to the match and Behave (as he already made plans with the wife) and giving Matt $100 and says not to give it to Pete. Pete is the ‘major’ of the GSE (Green Street Elite) firm (gang).

Elija Wood’s Matt who went to school for journalism learns the ways of the ‘Firm’. Soon becoming a respected member of the group. How long will that last if someone finds out, even though he is not one yet officially.  However to throw some drama in, his dad shows up to take him to lunch and one of the guys see him.

Hearing Charlie Hunnam with an English accent sounded so strange, more so than Elija Wood standing next to all those taller guys (you would have thought we were watching Lord of the Ring without the costumes) not to mention trying to look all rough and tumble. There’s a few funny parts, One in which Pete is trying to get  Matt to give him the money, another is one of the times at the Pub and the best is the justifying end.  Just remember our senses of humor may differ though, but damn does Hunnam have a quick hand, but then considering where something was aimed…

Ross McCall plays Dave in the group… I knew I saw him in something else, but couldn’t think if it was White Collar or some other show that came to mind, but  gut kept telling me it was White Collar and I was right as Keller.

I think a fan of any sport could enjoy this. I think it’s a great movie to watch before a big match-up if you are having a super bowl like party or just a movie night!     B
