Atomic Blonde

See the source image2017     R   1:55   action/thriller but really Drama      blu-ray   James McAvoy,  Charlize Theron, John Goodman, Bill Skarsgard

Adapted from the Antony Johnston and Sam Hart graphic novel The Coldest City movie Atomic Blonde stars Charlize Theron and James McAvoy.  Theron’s character is a cold war spy by the name of Lorraine Broughton who must recover a list of double agents amid a sea of questionable allies one in which is James McAvoy’s British agent David Percival. Percival, as you might be able to tell from the trailers, has gone a bit feral with lots of secrets and possibly STDs while embedded in East Berlin.

A MI*6 agent is murdered in 1989 Berlin Germany and fellow spy is sent to investigate and retrieve a list of double agents the dead agent was carrying.

I would swear the fight scenes were a faster pace in the trailers but during the movie, they’re kind of a bore, like the rest of it is. The fight scenes feel like they are over too quick compared to many other films. I know, I know… always leave them wanting more, but not when the fights look as though they are in slow motion and swear you could do them yourself if you had the time to re-watch them to memorize the choreography. To give you an idea for most 1 on 1 fight scenes in movies, let’s say they last 5 minutes-15 minutes. These I’m sure are 1-3 minutes long if even. In other words, for an ‘action movie,’ there’s not much action. It should more have been marketed as a spy drama, as there is NOTHING thrilling about it. If I watched it at night, I would have fallen asleep.

When I checked at some point to see how much longer the movie would be on, thinking it would be 15 minutes left, there was still over an hour of the movie left. I am VERY disappointed in this movie, and so glad I didn’t pay to see it in the theater as for me it looked promising enough to see in the theater. I think a baseball or golf game would have been more entertaining to watch. Also who the actual double agent is… I wasn’t surprised.

Split

2017,   PG-13,   Thriller, James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckly

Written and directed by M Night Shamalyan who I think actually had a part in this while someone is looking at security footage.

Three girls after a birthday party are ready to go home,  waiting for the father to come in the car they are already waiting in while he puts something in the trunk… he’s attacked and the girls are kidnapped.

Kevin (I think that’s the main character’s name, well at least the one whose body the other personalities inhabit. He’s supposed to have 23 personalities but we only see five.

  • Hedwig a 9-year-old
  • Dennis   The one who kidnaps the girls
  • Patricia   in co-hoots with Dennis
  • Barry     an artist
  • Orwell
  • Jade
  • Heidrich
  • 1 other

all of his personalities know about one another (which I think is supposed to be rare if I remember right) and are known as the Horde

WOW! McAvoy better win an Oscar for this or other awards! He did great as all those different characters. I can only imagine the mental and emotional toll all of those took.

I give M. Knight a comeback award for this one. I think he’s regained the magic he had with the Sixth sense and those. Though I didn’t see any mind-bending aside from the split and the surprise cameo.

Definitely WORTH a watch and at least Nominations for Best film, Director, Actor, Comeback

X-men Apocalypse

The usual suspects Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicolas Holt, Even Peters,James McAvoy, Sophie Turner with McGuyver’s Lucas Till (was he in the past ones?)

I don’t have much to say about this, other than we find out how  Charles Xavier becomes bald.

The plotline stinks, why does it seem centered on Mistique to me? Wasn’t crazy about Angel though glad he now has the sharpened wings. And s a few days later I can’t remember much (nothing that matters) about it.

It’s set in the 80s and starts in Ancient Egypt during a transfiguration Ritual (why not just call Professor McGonagal?)

Some ‘Gods’ or shall I say priests with the masks of their gods as well as soldiers around are protecting the body.

One of these soldiers who is supposed to protect what is going on is in on a plan against the ritual, and upon attacking gets folded up into a ball.

Later Charles Xavier’s school is burning down and Quicksilver goes to save everyone, one being a french bulldog which love the face like it’s in a car and its jsut not letting go of that slice of pizza!

Amusing the movie makes fun of it self!! saying the 3rd one always sucks and honestly.. I’m VERY glad I didn’t waste my money on it seeing it in the theater! I waited for cable!  Definitely a poor (below poor?) outing.

and EssexCorp. What is the Essex corp? I never heard of that before or don’t remember .

Honestly I’m not crazy about this set of X-men films… I like the originals better, but then I do need to rewatch those for a Class Cuts installment

Victor Frankenstein

2015  PG13 1:50  James McAvoy Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel plays a smart hunchbacked clown in a circus who is writing an anatomy book. Victor shows up and rescues him from his abusive life after saving one of his circus mates lives.

Victor’s flatmate Igor is a morphine addict and ‘is hardly ever there’, so the hunchback is supposed to say he’s Igor. Good old ‘Frank’ fixes the hunch, gives him a brace to straighten up his back and gets him cleaned up. And like magic he looks human and becomes Victor’s assistant with more of a moral compass than Victor. Ugh! The ghastly creature they first bring to life, looks like something from an old zombie movie.

I’m not sure if I can pin point why the movie didn’t do well but one reason is (at least for me) it felt like there was no heart.

If you are a fan of the actors then you might want to watch, especially the at first (almost?) unrecognizable Radcliffe in the beginning. Otherwise for an update to the Frankenstein story watch the show Second Chance.
